The winter holiday travel season is normally pretty busy for resort property operators in the Mexican Caribbean, the second most popular tourist destination in the country.
For one particular resort chain with more than a dozen resort hotels in the area, they are seeing “exceptional occupancy” levels to ring in the new year.
Exceptional Occupancy
It’s a busy end of the year for the owners of the Riu resorts in the Mexican Caribbean.
Their 14 different resorts for travelers are seeing strong reservations from travelers and are at, or nearly at, full occupancy levels to ring in 2024.
According to reports, Riu’s Mexican Caribbean Sales Director Javier Monje said that the resorts are doing extremely well to close the year.
They are especially seeing a large number of travelers visiting their beach destination resorts in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Costa Mujeres. He is anticipating the resorts to be sold out until sometime in January.
What Makes Riu Resorts So Popular?
There are a number of reasons why Monje feels the Riu properties are so popular with travelers to the Mexican Caribbean.
Of course, he believes it is the level of guest service and luxury provided to travelers helps make the resorts stand out in the minds of travelers to Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
He also says the different levels of pricing and amenities to meet the needs of many different tourists make the resorts very popular with visitors to the area.
However, he also cites the promotional relationship between the Spain-based company and local tourism officials as a key reason why travelers visit the Mexican Caribbean and often choose to stay at the many Riu resorts in the area.
Informing Travelers About the Mexican Caribbean
Partnering with local and Quintana Roo tourism officials to help inform tourists about how great the Mexican Caribbean is for a vacation getaway has benefited the local area at the same time it has benefited the Riu resorts in the region.
“It is, without a doubt, a collective achievement of the tourism industry, both the private sector and the municipal and state tourism secretariats,” Monje said in a report.
Working together is also helping to benefit the local community. According to Monje, the resorts recently had a job fair for more than 500 positions they had available for workers in the area.
The job fair helped to staff up their resorts for the peak winter holiday travel season as well as provide jobs for workers, many of which were seeking seasonal work to provide extra income for the holidays.
Tips For Travelers
Travelers to the Mexican Caribbean have a number of different choices and options of where to stay when visiting the beach resort destination for their vacation getaway.
The different types of amenities available at different price points help ensure that tourist hotspots like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and even Isla Mujeres continue to meet the diverse needs and wants of travelers to the area.
However, it also makes the area popular with travelers, which is why Cancun was the second most popular travel destination in Mexico this year, based on international arrivals at the Cancun International Airport.
Only the much larger Mexico City airport had more international arrivals.
This trend is expected to continue, especially with the opening of the new international airport in Tulum in December, with international arrivals expected to start in March of 2024.
Because of this, travelers should expect more of the popular resorts to sell out during popular travel times and should be planning their vacation getaway to the area earlier. They should also become accustomed to higher rates for the resort hotel rooms in the area.
