Why Tourists Are Driving Past The Cancun Hotel Zone To This Trendy Beach Destination

Last Updated

All eyes are on the Mexican Caribbean this year to see if it will beat the record-breaking 2023 that it experienced in the tourism sector.

With Cancun an obvious favorite and Tulum set to become more popular than ever due to its new international airport and connections via the new Maya Train, popular hotspots such as these are expecting huge numbers of tourists throughout summer and winter this year.

As exciting as this is for hotels and businesses, it also brings with it the potential for overcrowding and price surges, which many tourists want to avoid while on vacation.

That is why Costa Mujeres already saw occupancy of 90.2% during its first week of 2024.

Offering a far more tranquil and arguably more idyllic experience than the resort zone of Cancun, it certainly came as no surprise.

Why Are Tourists Picking Costa Mujeres?

Relaxing In Luxury

Ever since the pandemic, tourists’ taste for the more luxurious side of life has certainly grown, with ‘revenge travel’ taking hold to make up for the lost vacation time between 2020 and 2021.

Not afraid to spend more money on the lavish life, luxury hotels and resorts have been popping up all over the region, with Costa Mujeres being no exception.

With a plethora of dining and entertainment experiences, world-class spas and wellness centers, water parks, shopping areas, and other unforgettable activities, all-inclusive resorts are here to stay, with new ones opening all the time.

Ideal for the family vacation or romantic getaway, hotels in Costa Mujeres rival those in the busy hotspots of Cancun and Tulum, with prices ranging anywhere from US $189 a night to a whopping $682 a night, depending on what you want.

As the area experiences a development boom, now could be one of the final times to witness the area as it is before it starts to resemble the ever-popular hotspots such as Cancun and Tulum.

Busy, But Quiet

Costa Mujeres was the most occupied area in Quintana Roo in the first week of January 2024, showing just how popular the area is among national and foreign tourists.

With that being said, the destination still offers a far more tranquil, relaxed vibe compared to its neighbors.

Relatively untouched by the crazy party nightlife of Cancun, the coastline of Costa Mujeres is far quieter and undisturbed, offering a greater sense of privacy and peace for its guests, not to mention crystal clear waters and sugary white sands that look like something out of a postcard.

Though more resorts are popping up in the destination, they are still positioned further away from each other, seeming less crowded than the famous Cancun skyline, which is far closer together and cramped.

This gives visitors a greater sense of remoteness and the space to enjoy their relaxing vacation, with options for fun and nightlife still available to them if they so wish, just on a lesser scale than in Tulum and Cancun.

Safer Than Safe

One of the most important things that tourists look for when picking a destination for their vacation is safety.

Mexico can sometimes get a bad rap for its safety levels, especially in American headlines, which can sometimes deter visitors from picking it for their next trip.

Contrary to this, however, the Mexican Caribbean is a relatively safe place, with areas like Cancun and Costa Mujeres holding a great record for low crime rate activity.

Apart from pickpocketing,  which is an issue in every tourist area, as well as reports of feuding taxi and Uber drivers last year, most crime does not usually involve visitors and often takes place among local gangs.

Thanks to increased safety and surveillance by officials, places like Costa Mujeres feel incredibly safe, with patrols on beaches and CCTV often deterring any crime.

Large resorts also tend to have around-the-clock security, with authorization processes in place to keep unwanted visitors away, giving tourists peace of mind and a stress-free time on their vacation.

Costa Mujeres is also host to a wide range of tourist attractions on its doorstep, making it more than an ideal place to enjoy the beautiful Mexican weather and forget all your troubles!
