Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the gateway to the Mexican Caribbean, processing tens of millions of passengers every single year. How you navigate this massive hub dictates the tone for your entire vacation.
If you make the right moves, you can go from the tarmac to the beach in record time. If you make the wrong ones, you will start your trip exhausted, stressed, and financially penalized. While the core layout of the airport remains the same, the operational mechanics have shifted significantly for 2026.
Here are the five things you absolutely must avoid doing when you land in Cancun this year.

1. Waiting In The Manual Immigration Lines
For years, the defining image of arriving in Cancun was a winding, hour-long snake of tourists waiting to get their passports stamped. In 2026, there is zero reason for you to be in that line.
Cancun has fully integrated automated e-gates. If you are 18 years of age or older and hold a valid passport from an approved country (including the United States and Canada), completely bypass the manual desks. Walk straight to the digital kiosks, scan your passport, look into the camera, and walk right through. What used to be a grueling 45-minute ordeal is now a seamless three-minute process.

2. Assuming Checked Bags Are A Nightmare
If you read any viral travel advice from 2024 or 2025, the mandate was strictly “carry-on only.” The baggage claim carousels at CUN were notoriously understaffed, leading to massive delays where tourists waited longer for their suitcases than they did to clear customs.
For 2026, the landscape is shifting. The state governor recently pushed through aggressive mandates to increase ground staffing and streamline baggage handling, directly addressing the wait times. While traveling with just a carry-on will always be the fastest way out of any airport, checking a bag is no longer the guaranteed timeline-killer it used to be. The system is actively improving.

3. Talking To Anyone In The “Shark Tank”
This is the one rule that will never change. Once you grab your bags and clear the final customs check, you must walk through a long, sliding-glass corridor to reach the outside curb. This hallway is universally known as the “Shark Tank.”
It is packed wall-to-wall with highly aggressive timeshare salespeople and third-party transport hawkers. They are masters of deception. They will dress in official-looking uniforms, blow whistles, and loudly tell you that “your transportation is delayed” or that “you must check in here first.” Do not stop. Do not make eye contact. Do not say “no thank you.” Keep your head down and walk straight through the exit doors to the outside curb.

4. Winging Your Ground Transportation
Walking out of the Cancun airport without a plan and trying to negotiate a taxi on the spot is a guaranteed recipe for stress.
The immediate curb is chaotic. Trying to decipher which taxi stand is legitimate, negotiating rates in a second language after a long flight, and dealing with aggressive drivers is the absolute worst way to start a vacation. Furthermore, on-the-spot airport taxis charge a massive premium. Always pre-book a private, authorized transfer before you leave home. Your driver will be waiting outside the Shark Tank with a sign holding your name, allowing you to bypass the chaos entirely.

5. Exchanging Your Cash At The Kiosks
As travelers get smarter about tipping local staff strictly in Mexican Pesos instead of US Dollars, many make the mistake of buying their pesos right at the airport.
Avoid the currency exchange booths (casas de cambio) inside the terminals at all costs. They offer predatory exchange rates and high commission fees, essentially stealing 10% to 15% of your money’s value before you even step outside. Instead, either order pesos from your local bank before you fly, or walk past the exchange booths and use an official bank ATM to pull out local currency at the true market rate.
