5 Ways Americans Are Saving Money On Cancun Vacations This Year

While still cheaper than many other Caribbean destinations, several factors including the rising value of the Mexican peso mean that an all-inclusive vacation in Cancun is no longer as affordable as it once used to be.

Rising prices have forced many travelers, especially those hailing from the United States, to change their spending patterns to cut down on costs.

Even so, travelers are finding ways to enjoy Cancun while still making the most of everything the gorgeous destination has to offer, from accommodation to food and stunning nature.

With that in mind, here’s what Americans are doing to save on their Cancun getaway this year.

Booking All-Inclusives Instead Of Online Rentals

The appreciation of the Mexican peso compared to the U.S. dollar means that Americans are currently getting less bang for their buck compared to last year.

As a result, a growing number of American travelers are opting for all-inclusives rather than online rentals such as Airbnbs. And while resorts are generally more expensive, they come with a lot of perks not found elsewhere. From food to plentiful outdoor amenities, Americans are spending more time enjoying Cancun’s all-inclusive experiences.

Travelers can still find plenty of great Airbnb deals, especially on longer stays, which are ideal for digital nomads. However, cooking, cleaning, and transportation can all quickly add up.

Traveling During The Shoulder Season

The shoulder season is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel to Cancun. Lasting from September until early November, this is when Cancun’s resort occupancy rates are at their lowest.

According to new estimates, only around 60% of all rooms will sell out in the coastal hotspots this fall, compared to 80% to 85% during the peak of the summer season. Lower demand means cheaper rates and better deals, especially for budget-conscious travelers.

The shoulder season is also an ideal time to enjoy Cancun’s beaches without the crowds, although rain and even hurricanes tend to occur around this time.

Booking Accommodation Outside Of The Resort Zone

Cancun is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the Mexican Caribbean when it comes to all-inclusive accommodations. But for budget travelers, booking a boutique hotel or a hostel outside of the highly sought-after resort zone can translate to savings of several hundred dollars per person.

Areas such as downtown Cancun and Puerto Morelos are excellent alternatives to Cancun’s packed – and pricy – resort district. Offering plenty of culture, beaches, and top-rated local restaurants, venturing further from touristy areas is a great option for those looking to cut costs.

Avoiding Pricy Attractions

Attractions aimed at American travelers are among the costliest in and around Cancun. Admissions to theme parks like Xcaret Park can easily cost upwards of several hundred dollars per family, and that’s just for basic admission.

Instead of splurging on touristy theme parks, opt for cultural and historical attractions such as Mayan ruinsmuseums, or food tours. Cancun’s bustling downtown area is great for travelers seeking wallet-friendly activities; Mercado 28, the city’s largest market, is a must-see for a taste of local culture and life.

Booking Flights In Advance

Booking your flight well in advance is one of the best ways to save up for your next Cancun escapade. Although a last-minute vacation might seem tempting for many, the harsh reality is that ticket prices tend to skyrocket the closer they are bought to the departure date.

That means that travelers wishing to book their winter getaway should start booking now before millions of travelers cause a sudden surge in demand and, consequently, drive prices up.
