Tourists to Isla Mujeres will find several of the main roads in the island community closed until December 6 for road improvements.
Once the improvements are made, the roads will be in even better condition for visitors coming to Isla Mujeres for the peak winter holiday travel season.
Isla Mujeres Road Upgrades
According to Rosalva Carrillo Zárate, the director of the Isla Mujeres Department of Public Works, the construction that started back in August is estimated to be completed in just about two more weeks.
The repairs to the roadways in the centro of Isla Mujeres are not only to make sure that the roads are in better condition to provide better service for vehicles, but also provide a better image of the community to the thousands of visitors that will visit the island beach resort destination during the peak winter holiday travel season.
The road improvement work will involve the cutting, demolition and construction of stamped concrete crossings along with the releveling and repair of sinkholes in Adocreto Creek. Workers will also be busy releveling manhole covers and replacing old ones with brand new manholes.
According to Carrillo Zárate, Avenida Matamoros between Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero, Avenida Abasolo, between Avenida Rueda Medina and Guerrero and Avenida Juárez, between Avenida Matamoros and Abasolo will be the roads targeted for work.
Tourists are asked to avoid the roads and construction closures.
Part of a Long-Term Plan
The construction activity, which will wrap up in two weeks after starting in August is part of a multi-year project to improve the roads in Isla Mujeres and improve the infrastructure of the island for travelers.
There are currently 55 different projects planned on Isla Mujeres each year as part of the long-term Public Works rehabilitation plan. A total of 33 will be completed on the island zone and an additional 22 will be in the continental zone.
A number of playgrounds are included as part of the project planning.
Improving the Infrastructure
The infrastructure in the Mexican Caribbean has been criticized as needing work due to the impact of high levels of tourism over the past couple of post-pandemic years due to the revenge travel trend.
Also, tropical storms have taken their toll on local roadways and bridges over the years.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has been very focused on priority construction projects in Isla Mujeres that will not only enhance the lives of the residents of the state but also to improve the perception of the entire Mexican Caribbean region in the minds of travelers.
Ultimately, tourism is what brings the well-being and prosperity needed for everyone in the Mexican Caribbean. The improvements made will be able to improve the traveler experience in Isla Mujeres.

Travelers are the ones who will benefit from the focus of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde and Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa to invest in the long-term infrastructure to improve and enhance the visitor experience in Isla Mujeres.
Investments in the roadways on the island are only the first step in the process of improving tourist services on the island.
There are also efforts underway to bring free WiFi service to the island within the next year or two, which will improve access to technology for locals, travelers, and digital nomads residing on the island.
Investments in police protection and fire department services have also been made over the past year to provide additional safety and security protection for travelers in the area.
The long-term improvements being made now will ensure that Isla Mujeres remains a premier Mexican beach island destination resort for travelers all over the world for many years to come.

Me and friends went to the island last year,we noticed that there was only one restroom,for very many people,no shade availeble or a place to sitdown while wating for the boat to take you back to cancun We came to the conclusion that the was the last time we visit the island.

@Loreto nunez, I’m sorry we were there on November 5th. The terminal for the ferry is huge. I am one that can’t stand for a long time. We waited to get in line until the ferry was being boarded. We have stayed on the island in a beautiful home last August. House was beautiful! Our only issue was shopping for food as we don’t speak or read Spanish. Due to this it was hard shopping. However, we hired a chef for dinners which was responsible and amazing food. Our only issue is many places don’t take credit cards and if they do you hey add 10% to your bill. In the US cost for using card is 3.5%. Mana people don’t know this as the stores eats the cost.
