As tourism booms this year in Cancun, the surrounding areas are feeling the impact as well.

This has increased the need for additional essential services such as police, fire, and medical care to keep up with the demands of both locals and visitors alike.

Because of this need, the island community of Isla Mujeres – itself a big tourist draw on its own – will be adding a new police station to serve the public.

The new police station on Isla Mujeres is nearing completion in the Punta Sam area of the island. A grand opening ceremony at the building is expected soon.

It is being built strategically at the entrance to the hotel zone of Costa Mujeres, directly on the Punta Sam highway.

The location selected should make the police station convenient to serve the needs of both the locals and visitors to that area.

According to Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, the location was chosen as part of the local government’s efforts to enhance security and protect the public.

Due to the increase in visitation to Cancun and Isla Mujeres this year, this is one of the many efforts that have taken place to provide more infrastructure for tourism and locals on the popular destination island.

Not only has safety and infrastructure been a focus item for the local municipal government on Isla Mujeres, but it also has been a priority of Quintana Roo State Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

Part of Many Infrastructure Upgrades

The new police station is the latest of many upgrades that are being made on the popular tourist destination island of Isla Mujeres.

An additional two kilometers of the Punta Sam highway, where the police station is located, were also improved for better safety of drivers.

Also, the new Punta Sam police station on the island of Isla Mujeres is only one of four stations that were part of a recent infrastructure project to enhance security.

The Punta Sam police station is one of the two that were newly constructed to protect and serve the public on the island.

Meanwhile, two additional police stations were recently renovated and enhanced to better provide first responder services on the island in the time of need.

Recently, Mayor Gómez Ricalde held a grand reopening ceremony for a police station in the neighborhood area of Salina Grande.

Security Needs on Isla Mujeres

It’s not that the island was lacking in security or needed more police to enforce laws to start with.

Overall, Isla Mujeres is a relatively small island and really does not have the policing concerns of the larger cities on the mainland.

However, the local Isla Mujeres municipal government wants to keep it that way and is investing in infrastructure to protect local citizens and the important visitors to the island.

The increased need for additional first responder stations and additional infrastructure is due to the unprecedented number of visitors to Isla Mujeres after the pandemic.

After being forced to self-isolate with few options to get away, tourists are focused on international travel to beach resort destinations and have set their sights on Mexico, including Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

More Safety For Travelers

Overall, visitors to Isla Mujeres should feel even more comfortable with visiting the popular destination island, knowing there are more police available if needed.

In addition to the typical apprehension of criminals and investigation of crimes, the additional police on Island Mujeres also provide important services to tourists.

By being highly visible, they help deter the potential for crimes to occur. They also provide key information such as directions to important tourist services such as pharmacies and medical care.

The proactive move to add more police to the island, especially along the key highway to the hotel zone of Costa Mujeres, should enhance the tourist peace of mind about safety on the island.
