Cancun is set to become even safer for travelers this year thanks to a new announcement by local officials to construct five new police stations across several of the city’s neighborhoods.
The move comes as Cancun continues to implement new efforts to bolster security and pave the way for an even safer city amid skyrocketing travel numbers.
While the decision will largely benefit neighborhoods outside of Cancun’s hotel zone, it’ll have an indirect effect on the entire city, deterring organized crime from affecting travelers in the sun-soaked destination.

As travel numbers continue to rise, here’s a look at what Cancun officials are doing to improve safety for visitors.
New Police Stations To Reinforce Safety Across Cancun This Year
Cancun has taken a major step forward in improving safety for residents and travelers thanks to a recent decision to launch five new police stations across the coastal destination.
This week, the Secretariat for Citizen Safety revealed more details about a plan to tackle crime in several high-risk neighborhoods. Although crime levels have generally decreased in Cancun in recent years, some areas of the popular city experience above-average rates of armed robbery and violence, an issue that is now attracting more attention from policymakers.

According to Gómez Torres, the head of the regional law enforcement body, five neighborhoods across Cancun are set to receive a new police station to boost efforts to tackle criminal groups.
The new units will work closely with existing law enforcement agencies at the local and regional level to detect crime and share intelligence. As a result, Cancun is set to become even safer for millions of travelers.

Officials have been tight-lipped about the location of the new police stations, with only one new unit being officially confirmed for Cancun’s 256th district. In the meantime, authorities are working to determine the location of the other four stations based on existing crime levels.
For now, it appears likely that the new stations will be distributed across downtown Cancun, which is home to numerous neighborhoods with above-average crime rates.

While most visitors in the coastal destination opt to stay in the hugely popular Hotel Zone, a growing number of travelers are booking vacation rentals and other accommodations elsewhere in the city. As a result, officials are keen on protecting travelers in Cancun, regardless of where they choose to stay.
It is expected that Cancun’s new police stations will come equipped with state-of-the-art technology and surveillance systems that will be linked to the regional C5 law enforcement command center.
Cancun’s new government, led by Mara Lezama, has taken a proactive stance on public security, implementing a number of measures to improve safety for citizens and visitors. 2023 saw a record investment in law enforcement equipment, including new vehicles, helicopters, and UAVs.

Cancun is currently one of the safest destinations in Mexico for Americans thanks to an extensive network of law enforcement agencies working around the clock to prevent violent crime from affecting travelers. That said, travelers are still urged to exercise caution when vacationing in the sunny destination.
Petty crimes remain an especially alarming issue facing travelers; from overcharging taxi drivers to dubious online deals on vacation rentals and tours, travelers should be cautious when booking and paying for different services in Cancun.
