If you thought the “Cancun Craze” was slowing down, think again. The numbers are in, and they prove one thing: The crowds are back.

According to the latest official data from ASUR, Cancun International Airport just wrapped up its third-busiest November in history for international passengers.

Cancun Airport Records 3rd Busiest November in History for International Travelers

We aren’t talking about a quiet shoulder season anymore. We are talking about nearly 1.6 million international travelers flooding into the terminals in a single month. If you are planning a trip this winter, here is what you need to know before you land.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Let’s cut straight to the chase. November is usually the “warm-up” month before the holiday chaos. But this year, the warm-up looked a lot like peak season.

Here is the breakdown of international arrivals for November over the last few years:

  • Nov 2023 (The Record): 1.69 million
  • Nov 2022: 1.62 million
  • Nov 2025: 1.59 million
  • Nov 2024: 1.56 million

What does this actually mean?

It means international passenger traffic is UP compared to last year. We beat 2024 by about 1.7%. That might sound small on paper, but on the ground, that is an extra 27,000 people fighting for luggage carts, taxis, and spots in the immigration line.

The “slump” everyone was worried about earlier this year? It’s over. The volume has stabilized, and we are seeing massive numbers again.

On The Ground: What We Saw This Month

Statistics are one thing, but what does this actually feel like at the resort?

The Cancun Sun team has been on the ground for the last two weeks, staying at two different all-inclusive resorts in the Hotel Zone to file our December On The Ground Report. We can confirm the data matches the vibe: It is busy and resorts are buzzing.

If you are heading down soon, be prepared for two specific bottlenecks:

1. The “Towel Game” Is In Full Effect If you think you can roll out of bed at 11:00 AM and find a prime lounger by the pool, forget it. The occupancy rates are high enough that the “chair hogging” wars have returned. Even at massive properties like the new RIU Palace Kukulkan, space is at a premium by mid-morning.

We spoke to Steve, a traveler from Seattle staying at the same resort, who summed it up perfectly:

“I love the energetic vibe here right now, it feels like a party, but I honestly had to be down here by 9:00 AM just to reserve a towel. If you snooze, you lose.”

2. Dinner Reservations Are Hard To Get At both resorts we visited, walk-ins for the specialty restaurants were basically impossible. If you didn’t book your steakhouse or hibachi table the moment the concierge desk opened in the morning, you were stuck at the buffet.

Insider Tip: Download your resort’s app before you fly and book your dinners the second you check in.

What To Expect At The Airport

With 1.59 million people landing, the airport is moving, but it’s heavy.

1. Waiting For Luggage Is The Real Bottleneck This is where travelers are getting stuck. With arrival numbers beating last year’s stats, bags can take up to 45 minutes to arrive on the belt.

2. Immigration Is Flowing (Mostly) The good news is that the new E-Gates are keeping the lines moving, even with high volumes. However, they come with specific rules—like keeping your receipt. If you mess this part up, you will end up in the slow lane. Check our guide on how to use the new E-Gates so you don’t get stuck.

The Bottom Line

Why didn’t we beat the 2023 record? Simple. 2023 was the peak of “Revenge Travel,” an anomaly where everyone on earth was spending their savings to travel.

What we are seeing now in 2025 is the new normal. This is sustainable, heavy traffic. Cancun isn’t a “trend” that people are bored of; it remains the king of the Caribbean.

5 Rules For Peak Season

Tap a topic to reveal the insider tip.

Dodge The Taxis

Never hail a cab curbside at the airport. You will be hit with the “Gringo Tax” (upwards of $100 USD). Always pre-book a private shuttle before you fly to save 50%.

The 9:00 AM Cutoff

With occupancy high, the “Towel Game” is brutal. If you want a prime lounger by the main pool, you must claim it by 9:00 AM. After that, you’re sitting on the sand.

No Walk-Ins

Specialty restaurants are booking up instantly. Download your resort’s app while you are still at home, and book your dinners the second you check in.

Keep The Receipt

The new E-Gates are fast, but they print a small receipt. Do not throw this away. It is your official entry document. You cannot leave the airport zone without showing it.

The 3-Hour Buffer

Traffic on Colosio Boulevard is back. The “2 hours before flight” rule is dead. Arrive 3 hours early for your departure, especially with checked bags.

Our advice: Arrive early, pre-book your transfers, and for the love of god—get down to the pool by 9:00 AM if you want a chair.
