Here at The Cancun Sun, we believe the only way to really know the score is to be there. We spent this week on the ground visiting three different resorts to get a real-time “vibe check” of the beaches, the traffic, and the airport experience.

If you are heading down for the winter holidays, here is the unfiltered, boots-on-the-ground reality of what we found.

The Airport: The “Carry-On” Loophole

For years, the Cancun International Airport (CUN) has had a reputation for chaos. But our experience this week was surprisingly efficient—with one massive caveat.

The Reality: The arrival hall was packed, but the flow is moving faster than ever. Thanks to the addition of more automated e-gates for U.S. and Canadian citizens, the immigration process has been streamlined significantly. We breezed through passport control and were out to the curb in just 20 minutes.

The Catch: This speed only applies if you travel light. We witnessed travelers who checked bags waiting up to 45 minutes for their luggage to hit the carousel. The efficiency of the e-gates creates a bottleneck at the baggage claim; you might clear customs in minutes, but your bag is still sitting on the tarmac.

The Savvy Move: Fly carry-on. It is the single biggest hack for surviving a December arrival. If you must check a bag, be patient as it can take from 20-45 minutes.

The Traffic: A 30-Minute Surprise

We knew traffic would be heavy. We know about the ongoing construction. But the reality on Kukulcán Boulevard still caught us off guard.

The Delay: We experienced unexpected, heavy congestion that added a full 30 minutes to our travel time from the Hotel Zone back to the airport. This wasn’t during “rush hour”—this was mid-day gridlock.

The Insider Reality: Do not trust your GPS estimate. As we warned in our recent traffic alert, the combination of infrastructure projects and peak holiday volume creates bottlenecks that appear out of nowhere. If your map says it takes 45 minutes, budget for an hour and 15 minutes. Missing your flight because you wanted an extra 20 minutes by the pool is not the way to end your trip.

The Resort Vibe: The “Towel Game” Is In Full Effect

We visited three different properties to compare, and the energy was identical at all of them: Exciting, Busy, and Competitive.

The Sunbed War: If you think you can roll out of bed at 11:00 AM and grab a prime spot by the pool, think again. At all three resorts, the “towel game” was aggressive. Guests are waking up early to claim real estate. By 9:00 AM, the front-row sunbeds were mostly reserved with towels, books, and flip-flops.

The Dining Scramble: The days of walking into a restaurant on a whim are over for the season. Reservations for a la carte restaurants are mandatory. We found that the booking process varies wildly from resort to resort—some use dedicated apps, while others still require queuing at a concierge desk at 7:00 AM.

The Fix: Research your resort’s specific booking system before you board the plane. If you can book tables via an app in advance, do it. If not, make it your first stop upon arrival.

Check-In: The VIP Advantage

With occupancy rates soaring, the hotel lobbies are chaotic. We saw check-in lines that looked more like theme park queues.

The Tip: If your budget allows, booking a room category that includes VIP or private check-in is worth every penny this season. Skipping the 45-minute standing wait in the lobby to sit in a private lounge with a welcome drink sets a completely different tone for your vacation.

Safety: 7,000 Strong

One question we get asked constantly is about safety. Moving around the Cancun Hotel Zone felt completely safe the entire time.

The Presence: The addition of 7,000 new police and security forces was impossible to miss. Whether we were walking the strip, visiting shopping centers, or transiting between hotels, the increased visibility of the National Guard and tourist police was very apparent. Cancun is booming this December. The vibe is electric, the weather is perfect, but the crowds are real. To enjoy it fully, you need to be strategic: skip the checked bag, win the towel war by 9:00 AM, and pad your airport transfer time.
