The data is in, and the numbers are staggering. According to the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), the Mexican Caribbean is projecting over 20 million tourist arrivals by the end of the year. With hotel inventory swelling to 137,000 rooms, the demand for seats on planes is higher than ever.

Here at The Cancun Sun, we monitor flight connectivity closely because we know that more flights mean more competitive fares for you. To meet this surge, tourism officials have confirmed three major new flight connections launching for the 2025-2026 winter season. Whether you are coming from the U.S. Midwest or Canada, getting to the beach is about to get easier.
If you are one of the millions landing this winter, make sure you plan ahead. With arrival numbers breaking records, we strongly recommend securing your airport transportation in advance to avoid the chaos at the terminals.
Here are the 3 new routes confirmed by Sedetur head Bernardo Cueto.
1. American Airlines: Oklahoma City (OKC)
Launch Date: December 6, 2025
Duration: Seasonal (Through April 4, 2026)

American Airlines is deepening its footprint in the region. This new route connects Oklahoma City directly to Cancun, allowing travelers in the Sooner State to bypass busy hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth.
- The Impact: This is a huge win for Midwest travelers looking for a quick escape. As we noted in our initial report on this historic route, this marks the first-ever international service from Will Rogers World Airport, catering specifically to the high demand for leisure travel.
2. Porter Airlines: Toronto & Hamilton
Launch Date: December 12, 2025
Route: Toronto (YYZ) and Hamilton (YHM)

The Canadian market is roaring back. Porter Airlines is launching service from both Toronto Pearson and Hamilton International.
- The Vibe: Porter is famous for its “elevated economy” experience (no middle seats on their Embraer jets). The addition of Hamilton is particularly strategic, offering a lower-stress alternative for travelers in the Greater Toronto Area. This expansion aligns with Porter’s broader strategy to target sun destinations this winter.
3. Sun Country Airlines: Tulsa (TUL)
Launch Date: Winter 2025/2026

Complementing the American Airlines route, low-cost carrier Sun Country is launching service from Tulsa.
- The Market: This solidifies Oklahoma as a key emerging market for Cancun tourism. It offers a budget-friendly alternative for vacationers who want to spend their money on experiences rather than airfare. As we detailed when Sun Country announced this expansion, the twice-weekly service is perfectly timed for long weekend getaways.
Infrastructure Updates: The Nichupté Bridge
All these new flights mean more people on the roads. Fortunately, relief is in sight. Bernardo Cueto reiterated confirmation from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT): the massive Nichupté Bridge is on track.

- The Date: The bridge is scheduled to be ready by January 2026.
- The Benefit: This project will drastically reduce travel time between the airport and the Hotel Zone. You can read our full breakdown of the bridge’s impact on airport transfers.
Happy travels!
