Cancun Airport Adding More Automatic e-Gates To Speed Up Tourist Arrivals

Share The Article

As frequent flyers to CUN ourselves, we at The Cancun Sun love good news that gets you from plane to pool faster.

Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) just green-lit a major tech upgrade that includes more autonomous e-gates (Filtros Migratorios Autónomos, or FMA) for Cancun International Airport—part of a nationwide push to streamline arrivals ahead of a very busy 2026.

What’s being added (and why it matters)

INM approved MXN $247 million across three contracts to modernize document checks, facial recognition, and video surveillance at key entry points. A big piece of that is expanding e-gates in Cancun—the agency is requesting between 18 and 40 additional checkpoints for CUN on top of the existing units in Terminals 3 and 4. Translation: more lanes, shorter lines, and a quicker “Welcome to Mexico.”

This acceleration isn’t random. Mexico is preparing for a blockbuster year with FITUR 2026 (where Mexico is the Partner Country) and the inaugural ITB Americas trade show in Guadalajara—both expected to draw global attention and traffic. Modernizing airports (including Cancun) is a key part of that readiness plan.

Who can use the e-gates?

If you’re 18+, entering as a tourist, not traveling with minors, and hold a biometric (electronic) passport, you’re typically good to go.

The system supports Mexico plus dozens of partner nationalities (including the U.S. and Canada). Look for the e-gate signage when you enter the immigration hall at CUN.

Pro tip: The e-gate prints a small receipt—tuck it safely with your passport; you may be asked for it later. We’ve previously walked readers through this in our guide to flying into Cancun from 100+ cities.

What this means for your arrival

We’ve already seen big wins from Cancun’s earlier e-gate rollout—many travelers clear immigration in well under a minute when eligible. More gates should make that experience even more consistent across peak times. Just remember: the “bottleneck” can shift. Baggage claim and ground transportation are still where lines can form, especially on busy weekends with 500+ daily flights landing. Plan accordingly.

Need a refresher on recent airport upgrades? We covered more agents, more e-gates, and free Wi-Fi in our CUN improvements update this spring, and those upgrades are steadily rolling out.

How to use Cancun’s e-gates (step-by-step)

  1. Follow e-gate signs.
  2. Scan your e-passport and face at the kiosk.
  3. Collect the printed receipt—don’t lose it.
  4. Proceed to baggage claim and customs.

If you’re traveling with kids, don’t have an e-passport, or don’t meet the criteria, join the standard immigration line—agents are on hand and lines are moving faster than in years past thanks to staffing and layout tweaks.

Real-world advice from our team

  • Skip the “VIP fast track” upsell. With e-gates expanding, most travelers won’t benefit from pricey meet-and-greet services that don’t actually use a different line. We broke down why it’s usually not worth it here.
  • Control what you can after immigration. Pre-book your ride so you can glide past the infamous “shark tank” of sales pitches in arrivals. We share practical strategies in our high-volume arrivals explainer.
  • Use the free Wi-Fi while you wait for bags to hit the carousel or to message your driver. Coverage has improved across terminals.

The bottom line

Cancun International Airport is doubling down on technology to keep pace with record demand, and more e-gates are on the way.

If you’re an eligible traveler, expect a smoother, faster arrival—just keep that e-gate receipt, pre-book your ride, and save the “VIP” splurge for a beachfront cabana instead.

Is there an exit line at the airport arrival when friends or a well known taxi driver can come and pick us up? Thank you PS By the way, I read all of your informative emails. Great job, a real asset for Cancun and the region.
