Cancun Officials Issue New Warning Over Fake News About Hurricanes

Share The Article

We’re all for staying informed during storm season—but as we at The Cancun Sun have seen time and again, a single viral rumor can cause more panic than a passing squall.

This week, Cancun’s Civil Protection chief reminded everyone to ignore hurricane “chisme” on social media and stick to verified sources only.

The city is entering its historically most active window from September through November, so officials are stepping up monitoring, without any current threat to Cancun.

What officials are saying

Antonio de Jesús Riveroll Ribbon, Director of Civil Protection for Benito Juárez (Cancun), urged residents and visitors to rely on official forecasts and statistics instead of alarmist posts.

He noted that authorities are watching the Atlantic closely and will communicate any change in risk via official channels.

At the time of the municipal update, there were no nearby systems threatening Cancun; the National Hurricane Center, meanwhile, is tracking Hurricane Erin far to the north over the northwestern Atlantic—well away from the Mexican Caribbean.

Civil Protection also highlighted preparedness: the municipality has 82 temporary shelters, plus 76 hotel shelters ready to activate if needed. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, so the focus now is vigilance and verified information.

How to spot hurricane fake news

In busy storm cycles, rumors can travel faster than the wind—especially in WhatsApp groups, neighborhood Facebook pages, and viral TikToks that look “official” at a glance.

A dramatic map or confident voiceover doesn’t equal accuracy, and outdated screenshots get recycled every season.

Before you share something that could stress out friends or other travelers, do a 30-second gut check using the same quick steps we at The Cancun Sun use in our newsroom. It’s easy, it’s calm, and it keeps the focus on facts… not fear.

  • Check the source: If it’s not NHC, SMN/Conagua, or local/state government, treat it as unverified. Screenshots without links are a red flag. (Use the accounts above.)
  • Beware of “certain landfall” claims days in advance: Reliable forecasts use cones and probabilities, not absolutes a week out. Stick to the NHC’s outlooks.
  • Watch the timestamp: Old graphics get recycled during every storm. Always confirm the advisory time on NHC/SMN before sharing.
