Cancun Taxi Prices Will Not Go Up Until 2023

Share The Article

The cost of nearly everything is on the rise right now, especially gas, but despite the changing times, Cancun taxi prices will not go up until at least 2023.  This news is according to Rubén Carrillo Buenfil, secretary of the Andrés Quintana Roo Taxi Drivers Union, who stated that “the decision not to increase rates seeks to avoid effects on the user’s pocket, although other unions have already announced the increase.”  In some places, like Playa del Carmen, the price of a taxi ride is expected to go up as early as September and at the very least by the end of the year.

There was a small increase in Cancun taxi rates earlier in the year, but this was prior to the major rise in gas prices and inflation.  Further increases will not be implemented this year in order to keep the prices affordable for tourists visiting Cancun.  This decision specifically applies to taxi services, with no mention as to whether other types of public transportation in the city will raise their prices.

Taking a taxi in Cancun can be a little expensive, depending on where the pick-up and drop-off points are.  There is always a starting rate and then a charge per kilometer, and an additional charge for tourists that need to have the taxi wait while they go into a store or other establishment.  The starting rate is around 50 pesos, or about $2.50, and the per kilometer rate is approximately $3.00.

While this doesn’t seem like much money it does add up, especially for rides to and from Cancun International Airport.  The airport is about 22 km from the Hotel Zone, so with the base fare and the per kilometer fair, a taxi from the Cancun Hotel Zone to the airport would cost as much as $60 or more.  Tourists can save money, though, by booking their transportation to and from the airport in advance.

Recently the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo launched an app that allows passengers to check the rates for taxi services in order to be sure they are being charged correctly.  But even more important is making sure not to get into a fake taxi, which is an ongoing problem in Cancun.  All legitimate taxis will have a registration number on the side of their cab at the very least.

In Playa del Carmen the rates are expected to go up and the union leader there also made a statement explaining their decision.  Luis Herrera, leader of the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Union stated that “This change is for the benefit, since we will work together to improve our units, train operators and provide a better service to users, this increase does not seek to harm the pockets of citizens.”  Currently, they are awaiting approval for the increase request, which could take place as early as September but no later than the end of the year.

For now, rates for Cancun visitors will stay the same, which is good news during a time when it seems like everything is going up in price.  For tourists who book ahead of time for airport taxi services to and from the airport to the Hotel Zone, the rate could be as low as $25 but it will double if not scheduled in advance.  The alternative is private transfers which can often cost more.

Some of the legitimate transfers include:

  • Cancun Airport Transportations
  • Cancun Cheap Transfers
  • USA Transfers
  • Cancun Valet Transfers
  • Discovery Mundo Transfers

Getting around Cancun is one of the most stressful parts of the trip but visitors that use the available resources will have an easier time. And at least for now, visitors don’t have to worry about the prices skyrocketing, keeping the cost of at least that part of the trip down for now.
