Cancun has become the most popular tourist hotspot in Mexico and one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world.  It has been popular for a while now, but the popularity of the Mexican Caribbean vacation destination continues to grow, and as it does, local officials continue to address safety and security in the city in order to keep tourists safe.  Now, Cancun is testing new ways to modernize transportation in the Hotel Zone in an effort to improve security and convenience even more.

Is Cancun Safe

Despite the warnings from the U.S. State Department about safety in the Mexican Caribbean, the most recent one due to the battle between taxi and Uber drivers, Cancun is actually very safe for tourists.  In fact, Cancun officials take the security of tourists very seriously, and it isn’t uncommon to see military soldiers patrolling the streets of the downtown area and Hotel Zone, as well as the beaches.  For tourists who stay in these areas, there is very little chance of becoming a victim of a crime in Cancun.

Security In Cancun

In addition to hundreds of soldiers being deployed to monitor Cancun’s busiest tourist areas, video surveillance is also utilized. This provides more of a method to find criminals after the fact, but it also deters criminals from committing crimes as well.  Additionally, police officers can be seen riding up and down the beaches on ATVs keeping an eye on things too.

The Future Of Security In Cancun

The electric buses that are being tested in Cancun are not only great for the environment, but they will have a safety feature of their own. Each bus is equipped with GPS and cameras, allowing law enforcement to not only see what takes place on the buses but to locate them as well.  While these are currently only in the testing stage, if found to be useful, they will be another added element of security in the busy tourist city.

Crime In Cancun

Most of the crime that takes place in Cancun has to do with drug dealers and territorial disputes between different groups.  It is very rare for crimes to occur within the Hotel Zone, where the majority of the tourist activity takes place.  As long as tourists do not get involved with drugs and stick to busy tourist areas, it is very unlikely that they will be present when criminal acts take place.
