While the Maya Train project has been the subject of some controversy, many travelers are looking forward to having the opportunity to see more of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The massive project, which is broken down into seven sections, will include nearly 1,000 miles of track and 22 stations along the way, one of which will be located on the Cancun Airport property.

Along this route, Cancun tourists will be able to visit five different Mexican states when the Maya Train is complete.

The Five States Along The Maya Train Route

Cancun tourists have long been visiting other parts of the Mexican Caribbean and even further into the Yucatan Peninsula, but now it will be easier than ever.

The Maya Train will pass through a total of five states, each with something to offer for experience-hungry tourists.

Those five states include Quintana Roo (the home state of popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum), Tabasco, Chiapas, Yucatan, and Campeche.

So Many Places To Visit With So Little Time

The scheduled completion date for much of the Maya Train project is December 15 of this year.

Tickets are expected to cost between $40 – $50 for tourists, but it is still unclear how far that will get you.

Aside from the ticket prices, knowing a little bit about each of these states will help you decide where you want to visit first when the first stage of the Maya Train is completed in December.

Quintana Roo

In addition to Cancun and the other destinations mentioned above, Quintana Roo is full of amazing vacation destinations.

Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, and Cozumel are a few more to add to that list.

Among the many destinations in Quintana Roo, you can visit numerous cenotes, the Tulum Ruins, the ruins in Cancun, adventure parks like Xcaret, coral reefs that are part of one of the largest reef systems in the world, and more.

Tabasco

The state of Tabasco is located west of Quintana Roo and in the southern part of the Peninsula, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Its most visited city, the capital, is Villahermosa, and it has a lot to offer for tourists, particularly those into history and culture.

Some of the sites to explore in the state are the historic downtown area of Villahermosa, the open-air museum/garden Parque-Museo La Venta, and the Villa Luz Ecological Reserve.

Chiapas

Located south of Tabasco, Chiapas borders the Pacific Coast and Guatemala and has both mountains and rainforest.

The real claim to fame for Chiapas, though, is the Mayan archeological sites, including the Palenque Ruins, and the Spanish colonial towns, and architecture.

Chiapas is also home to waterfalls, lakes, beautiful countryside, and canyons, so it’s a fantastic destination for nature lovers too.

Yucatan

Yucatan is the closest state to Cancun out of the five that you can visit on the Maya Train route, and it has some amazing places to visit.

Merida is in the state of Yucatan, and so is the Magic Town of Valladolid, which has a cenote, Cenote Zaci, in the middle of the town.

Yucatan is also home to some very well-known and important Mayan Ruins, including the Izamal Ruins, the Ek Balam Ruins, and the famous Chichen Itza archeological site.

Campeche

Campeche, situated between Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico on the west, is a World Heritage Site.

It’s home to a number of Mayan ruins, including the Becan and Edzna archeological sites.

In the city of Campeche, you can explore beautiful colonial architecture, stunning beaches, and authentic Mexican restaurants for a much different experience than you’ll find in the Mexican Caribbean.
