Cancun’s Maya Train: We Analyzed Hundreds of Reviews. Here’s What Travelers REALLY Think!

An Original Report by The Cancun Sun

The sleek carriages glide through the jungle backdrop, hinting at both Mayan heritage and modern ambition. Mexico’s Tren Maya is no longer just a grand vision; key sections are operational right now, carrying thousands of tourists and locals along the bustling Riviera Maya corridor. But beyond the official photos and government announcements, what’s it actually like to ride this highly anticipated new railway? Is it the seamless, comfortable journey travelers dreamed of, or are there still kinks being worked out?

Cancun's Maya Train: We Analyzed Hundreds of Reviews. Here's What Travelers REALLY Think!

Here at The Cancun Sun, we know those are the questions on every visitor’s mind. We spent countless hours sifting through hundreds of recent online reviews, social media posts, travel blogs, forum discussions, and video accounts from real passengers who have ridden the Tren Maya in recent weeks and months, we looked past the hype and the criticism to understand what real people are truly experiencing on the operational Quintana Roo segments – primarily connecting Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Passengers Maya Train

Here’s the unfiltered reality of riding the Tren Maya today:

First Off: Yes, It’s Running (But Know Your Route)

For now, the most reliably operating passenger routes connect key spots along the coast, primarily running between Cancun Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum Pueblo. While the grand vision includes a full loop around the Yucatan Peninsula, focusing on these currently active coastal sections is your best bet if you’re planning a trip in the near future. Published schedules are available, but based on recent traveler feedback, building some flexibility into your plans is wise, as timetable adjustments can still happen.

Booking Your Ticket: Digital Dreams vs. Station Reality?

Getting tickets is a recurring theme in traveler feedback. The official Tren Maya website is the primary channel, though reports of glitches, payment processing issues (especially with foreign cards), and confusing seat selections have been frequent. Some travelers mention success using the companion mobile app, while others found it equally buggy.

The consensus? Patience is key. Many recommend trying the booking process multiple times or even different browsers. An alternative that numerous travelers found less stressful, especially if plans are flexible, is buying tickets directly at the station. While this carries the risk of sell-outs on popular routes or times, many reported a smoother transaction process in person, often with helpful staff navigating the system. Just be sure to arrive well in advance if you choose this option.

The Station Situation: Sleek, Modern… and Sometimes Remote

The stations themselves generally receive high marks for being new, clean, modern, and air-conditioned, often featuring striking architecture. However, a significant point frequently raised by travelers is their location. Many stations, including vital ones like Cancun Airport and Tulum Pueblo, are situated a considerable distance outside the main hotel zones or town centers.

This “last mile” problem is crucial. Travelers consistently report needing to factor in additional time and cost for taxis or shuttle services to get to and from the stations. While some shuttle connections exist (especially at Cancun Airport linking terminals to the train station), relying solely on the train to drop you right where you need to be usually isn’t realistic. Factor this extra transit into your planning and budget – it can easily add 20-40 minutes and significant taxi fare onto each end of your train journey.

All Aboard: Comfort, Cleanliness, and Connectivity

Once onboard, the experience generally gets positive reviews. Passengers frequently praise:

  • Comfortable Seating: Seats are often described as modern, spacious (especially compared to buses), with decent legroom.
  • Cleanliness: Carriages are consistently reported as being very clean and well-maintained.
  • Air Conditioning: A welcome escape from the tropical heat.
  • Onboard Staff: Often described as friendly and helpful.
  • Bathrooms: Available and generally reported as clean.

However, onboard amenities can be inconsistent. While WiFi is advertised, numerous reviews cite it as being patchy, slow, or simply non-functional during their journey. Food and drink options onboard have also been limited according to many recent reports, often consisting of basic snacks and beverages. Packing your own substantial snacks and drinks is a frequently shared tip.

The Ride Itself: Smooth Sailing or Shaky Schedules?

The journey itself is often described as smooth and relatively quiet. In terms of speed, it’s generally faster than driving or taking a bus between stations, but the aforementioned station commutes can negate some time savings.

Punctuality receives mixed reviews. While some travelers report perfectly on-time departures and arrivals, many others mention delays or schedule changes, sometimes significant, often with limited communication. Building buffer time into your itinerary if you have connections or tours planned seems essential based on current feedback.

As for the views? While marketed as a scenic journey through the jungle, many travelers note that large portions of the view, particularly between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, can be obscured by vegetation or sound barriers close to the tracks. Don’t expect panoramic vistas for the entire ride, though glimpses of the Mayan jungle are certainly part of the experience.

The Cost Factor: How Much to Budget?

Ticket prices vary based on class ( turista, premier) and route. Recent reports suggest, for example:

  • Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen (Tourist): Roughly $13-20 USD one-way.
  • Playa del Carmen to Tulum Pueblo (Tourist): Around $11-17 USD one-way.

Important Caveat: These are examples from recent traveler reports and can change. Prices are officially set in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Always check the official Tren Maya website for the absolute latest fares for your specific date and route. Remember to add those station transfer costs (taxis, etc.) to your total transportation budget.

The Verdict: Common Praises & Complaints Summarized

  • Praises: Modern trains, comfortable seats, cleanliness, AC, helpful staff (often), faster transit between stations than driving/bus.
  • Complaints: Station locations far from town centers, buggy booking website/app, WiFi unreliability, schedule delays/changes, limited onboard food/drink options, obscured views in sections.

Tips from Fellow Travelers:

  • Book tickets online well in advance, but be prepared for potential website issues. Have a backup plan to buy at the station.
  • Arrive at the station early, especially if buying tickets there or unfamiliar with the location.
  • Factor in taxi/shuttle time and cost to/from stations at both ends of your journey.
  • Download offline entertainment; don’t rely on the WiFi.
  • Bring your own snacks and drinks.
  • Be flexible with your schedule; delays can happen.
  • Check the official website for the absolute latest schedules and prices before your trip.

Conclusion: Is the Tren Maya Worth It For Your Trip Right Now?

Based on the collective voice of recent travelers, riding the Tren Maya’s operational Quintana Roo sections offers a glimpse into the future of regional travel – it’s modern, comfortable, and can be faster point-to-point between stations. However, it’s clearly still a system finding its rhythm.

If you value comfort, air conditioning, and a modern travel experience, and if your lodging or plans align well with the somewhat remote station locations (or you budget for the transfers), it can be a great option, especially compared to potentially crowded buses.

But if your priority is absolute punctuality, seamless door-to-door convenience, robust onboard services, or budget travel where every peso counts (factoring in transfers), you might find existing options like the ADO buses or private transfers still more practical for certain journeys at this stage.

The Tren Maya is undoubtedly an exciting development. As the network expands and operations mature, many of the current wrinkles will likely be ironed out. I took the Tren recently. Cancun to Palenque & back .

The Tren itself is GREAT !! Service on the Tren is GOOD , don’t expect 5 stars from anything anywhere in the beginning ( that’s just being unreasonable )

Times were GREAT . I am jubilado , so no hablo gotta be here on the hour 🤷‍♂️

Staff is GREAT , they understand 👍👍 .As with any governmental operation …. Is a lot that THEY cannot do anything about . “ Quit your bitching “

Station location …. Somebody needs to be ashamed of themselves!! This is going to CONTINUE ago cost and haunt you .

Transfers from the stations to the city ……Somebody needs to be ashamed of themselves. Biggest reason I will not go again . What good is it if you go on the Tren and literally get stuck in the jungle with no connection to anywhere 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

Second “ career ending move “ ….. these problems and potential problems are NEVER ADDRESSED ‼️‼️ you don’t know about the 50 km gap between the station and “ anywhere “ until you get off the Tren & are standing there with the iguanas & Guardia National …. By the way , these folks are fantastic ….. but uninformed .

Bad news is always first and foremost and the most colorful…..simplicity in fixing a lot of this is staring at you from a mirror ….. prove the “ naysayers “ wrong ……DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE THINGS YOU CAN ……OR AT LEAST LET IT BE KNOWN .
