Entry Points For Tulum Beaches To Be Renovated For Easier Access & Safety

Last Updated

It was announced earlier this week that the municipality of Tulum will be getting a big investment from the Mexican federal government in order to build better infrastructure and improve access to some of the most protected areas in Tulum, which will include a number of the city’s beaches.

Once pegged as “hidden gems,” Tulum’s beaches and coastal attractions routinely welcome busloads of tourists from near and far just looking for that piece of paradise. If you’re familiar with Tulum at all, you’ll know that a number of beaches are much harder to access than others. You could visit for weeks and still be on the hunt for that perfect beach that’s within walking distance to your hotel but also pristine. Well, that is set to change in the coming year.

An official for the Mexican government’s Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (referred to as Sedatu) made the announcement that they would be investing one billion pesos (approximately 50 million USD) to make improvements in infrastructure and accessibility to beaches along what’s known as the Tulum Jaguar National Park. The announcement was made by Ernesto Pavón Gutiérrez, representing the Quintana Roo branch of Sedatu.

According to the statements, the renovations will include opening eight different beach access pathways to help tourists better access Tulum’s coastline. This will be to beaches located between the entrance of Tulum and along the Tulum Archeological Zone.

  • Parking areas near the coast
  • Administrative offices for the INAH, the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

While some of this section of Tulum is national public land, some areas under the plan are currently under private ownership. Gutiérrez stated that Sedatu is currently speaking with the land owners in order to get the right permissions to make the renovations. In his comments, he explained that “there will be no purchase or expropriation” in order to get the job done for this project. He also stated that many local businesses in the area, such as hoteliers, were on board with the project as it would mean better access to their properties when the public lighting is built.

Tulum’s Jaguar National Park – Information For Travelers

The Jaguar National Park, or the January Natural Protected Area, was created in the summer of 2022 by the Mexican government in an effort to conserve the ecosystem of this region, which consists of over 8.5 square miles of land.

The area includes an underground river network that sprawls over 1,200 miles of underground waterways and caves of the Sac Actun and the Ox Bel Ha ecosystems. On top of that, it is complete with over 900 native flora and fauna, including some that are at risk of extinction.

Better Beach Access To The Tulum Archeological Zone

While the details of the government project haven’t been laid out yet, the improvements for better beach access are currently said to include one of the most sought-after attractions in the Mexican Caribbean: The Tulum Archeological Zone. It is located on the northern section of the National Park with some of Tulum’s most popular beaches to the south, including Playa Sante Fe, Playa Paraiso, and Playa Las Palmas.

The attraction is deemed one of the prettiest temple ruin sites in the world with the stunning Caribbean Sea serving as its backdrop, it’s no surprise that the Tulum ruins is on everyone’s travel bucket list.

Tulum: One Of The Most Popular Destinations In Mexico’s Riviera Maya

Known as being a more alternative destination to Cancun, international travelers have been visiting Tulum for decades. While it was once an under-the-radar hippie beach town, tourists still flock to Tulum for its trendy restaurant and bar scene and boutique hotels, not to mention the idyllic beaches along the coast. And if you’re looking for health and wellness retreats, Tulum could be the place to lay your carry-on suitcase for a week or two.

But regardless of rising travel prices and busy beaches, Tulum was still one of the favorite travel destinations of U.S. tourists last year.
