Iconic Cancun All-Inclusive Brand Announces Major Renovations For These 2 Resorts

Share The Article

If you are a frequent traveler to the Mexican Caribbean, chances are high that you’ve stayed at—or at least partied at—a RIU.

They are the reliable giants of the all-inclusive world. You know exactly what you are going to get: that distinct purple lighting, the 24/7 sports bar, and a solid beach day.

In a destination where brand-new luxury resorts are popping up every month, even the classics can start to feel a little tired.

Well, RIU is seemingly aware of that, too.

We’ve been tracking some major moves from the Spanish hotel chain, and they have confirmed that 2 of their most popular properties in our region are going dark this year for massive overhauls. And when I say “overhaul,” I don’t just mean new throw pillows.

RIU CEO Luis Riu has described these upcoming projects as “macro” renovations—so deep that when they reopen, they will essentially be brand-new hotels.

Here is what you need to know if you have a trip planned for 2026.

1. Riu Palace Peninsula (Cancun)

The Dates: Closing April 6, 2026 – Reopening July 25, 2026

If you know the Cancun Hotel Zone, you know this building. It’s that massive, modern tower with the distinctive cut-out architecture sitting right on a prime stretch of beach.

It’s always been a favorite because of its location, but it’s going offline for the entire early summer season. The “complete renovation” label suggests they are likely gutting the rooms and common areas.

My Advice: If you were eyeing this spot for a Fourth of July getaway or a graduation trip, you need to pivot. The reopening date is currently set for July 25, but seasoned travelers know that construction delays are real. I’d personally avoid booking the very first week it reopens unless you enjoy the sound of power drills with your morning coffee.

2. Riu Palace Mexico (Playa del Carmen)

The Dates: Closing May 4, 2026 – Reopening September 5, 2026

The Big Twist: Becoming Adults-Only

This is the bigger news of the two. Located in the exclusive Playacar community just south of downtown Playa del Carmen, Riu Palace Mexico has historically been a family-friendly option.

That ends this fall.

When the resort reopens its doors on September 5, 2026, it will debut as an Adults-Only property. This is a huge strategic shift. Playacar is already a mix of family and adult options, and it looks like RIU wants to capture more of the couples/honeymoon market here.

My Take: This is a smart move. The architecture of Riu Palace Mexico (it’s very grand, very colonial style) actually lends itself better to a sophisticated adult vibe than a chaotic kid-zone. But if you are a family who has loyally visited this specific hotel for years, you’re going to need a new home base for your Christmas 2026 trip.

Why This Is Happening Now

It feels like RIU is on a serious investment spree in Quintana Roo. They just cut the ribbon on the new Riu Ventura (their sixth hotel in Cancun), and now they are circling back to polish their crown jewels.

In the competitive world of Mexican all-inclusives, you can’t rest on your laurels. With competitors like Hyatt and Marriott expanding aggressively in the region, RIU is making sure their “Palace” tier actually feels like a palace.

What Should You Do?

  • Check Your Reservations: If you booked Riu Palace Mexico for a family trip in October 2026, check your booking immediately. You might need to be re-accommodated to a different RIU property nearby.
  • Watch for Grand Opening Deals: Usually, when a resort reopens after a renovation this big, they run “soft opening” rates that can be a steal. Keep an eye on prices for late August (Peninsula) and mid-September (Mexico).
