New Maya Train Route From Cancun To Palenque Officially Begins Operations

Today is the day; the next section of the Maya Train which is set to travel between Cancun, Quintana Roo to Palenque, Chiapas officially begins operations

The Maya Train is the long-awaited, billion-dollar infrastructure project that is predicted to revolutionize travel for tourists and locals alike throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

As the region experiences a tourism boom like never before, the call for a world-class transport service has been at the top of everybody’s list, though causing some controversy among locals who don’t wish their historic landscape to be changed or ruined.

The New Maya Train Route

Off to a somewhat rocky start, the first route between Campeche and Cancun, which travels through the capital city of Yucatan, Merida, has been reporting delays and cancellations while it tries to find its footing.

Much to the disappointment of tourists who are ready to experience the state-of-the-art transport service, officials are keen to get things running smoothly and have suspended the service until tomorrow.

However, the new route is set to begin today, arriving in Chiapas for the first time with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) on board.

Lopez Obrador has brought about great change for the country, introducing the Maya Train and the newly opened Tulum International Airport under his administration.

With only special guests and officials traveling the new route today, services for the public are expected to begin again tomorrow, allowing them to travel between Cancun and Palenque for the first time.

Ticket sales will also be available again from tomorrow, both online and at the train stations, however, be prepared for busyness and overcrowding, with the potential for tickets to sell out.

Due to high demand within the first two weeks of opening, tourists were left disappointed as there were no seats left to travel, as most people had bought tickets ahead of time.

Officials have promised that tourists will be able to use the fully functioning Maya Train and all routes by February 2024, connecting the entire Yucatan Peninsula and unlocking hidden gems for its visitors that were once much harder to reach.

The Future Of The Maya Train

As the next section of the Maya Train begins operations, it is important to reflect on just how far the project has come.

The construction of the train has been one of the most controversial works of the Mexican government, with some sectors of society expressing their direct opposition to it due to the environmental impact that it could cause.

It has been assured by government officials, however, that all necessary measures have been taken to reduce any negative impact on the incredible region, and will hopefully bring nothing but benefits to tourists and locals for many years to come.
