Puerto Morelos Beaches To Receive Major Upgrade Amid Soaring Demand
As Cancun fills up with travelers, a growing number of visitors are setting their sights on other comparable destinations.
For many, Puerto Morelos fits the bill; home to plentiful white-sand beaches, luxurious all-inclusives, and stunning nature, this sun-soaked destination is an excellent alternative to its northern counterpart.

And with demand for the popular location skyrocketing, officials are busy planning for the upcoming summer season.
This week, Puerto Morelos’ mayoress Blanca Munoz announced an ambitious renovation of the city’s main beach areas.
According to the executive, work will soon begin on transforming the entry point of six popular Puerto Morelos beaches. The goal of the upgrade is to make Puerto Morelos an even more appealing destination for mass tourism, as travel numbers continue to rise across the Mexican Caribbean.

Some of the main tasks for construction workers over the coming months include improvements to public lighting, repainting aging buildings, and adding new services for travelers, such as public bathrooms.
Puerto Morelos is home to a number of popular beaches situated along the entire length of the sun-soaked municipality. Officials are now focusing their efforts on improving beaches around downtown Puerto Morelos, as well as those located in the vicinity of all-inclusive resorts, such as The Fives Oceanfront.

One of the Mexican Caribbean’s top beaches – Punta Maroma – is located in the municipality of Puerto Morelos. The remote beach is ideal for travelers seeking a calm retreat away from the hustle and bustle of packed resort areas. However, travelers will have to purchase admission to reach the isolated beach.

In addition to its excellent array of white-sand beaches, Puerto Morelos is also regarded as one of the top nature destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
Not only is the hotspot home to dozens of cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) along the famed Ruta de los Cenotes, it also contains dozens of acres of mangroves.
Officials are currently ramping up efforts to protect and improve the state of Puerto Morelos’ biodiversity. Even as travel numbers skyrocket, environmental experts want to ensure the location’s sustainability for years to come.

Last week, Puerto Morelos’ mangroves were declared a protected natural area, meaning that businesses will no longer be able to set up shop within the city’s mangroves. In addition to providing a safe habitat for up to 25% of the Mexican Caribbean’s plant and animal wildlife, the area’s mangroves protect against tropical storms.

I welcome the idea of more public bathrooms and hopefully trash cans. It's hard to find a place to throw out your trash while on the beach. Many beer bottles and cans are left in the sand. Having said this, I will miss the small town vibe when when it's gone.
