Packing Essentials For Your Cancun All-Inclusive Vacation

Last Updated

Organization is the name of the game when it comes to packing for your Cancun vacation. After all, you don’t want to realize you’ve forgotten something vital as you arrive at your carefully selected Cancun resort. With a little pre-planning, you can set off for the airport knowing you’re ready for anything – or at least ready for a great time.

Here are some of the most important items to pack for your Cancun vacation.

Passport

An obvious essential, your passport is arguably the most important item you will pack for your vacation. Not only is it essential for travel, but you may also be asked for your passport – and/or your driver’s license – if you plan on renting a car or other transport during your trip.

Currency

  • Mexican Pesos

If you’re going to use Mexican currency, it always pays to exchange US dollars for Mexican pesos before leaving the US. Not only will you get a better exchange rate, but you can often sell back any unspent money when you return home.

  • US Dollars

Many parts of the Mexican Caribbean will accept payment in US dollars, so you don’t necessarily need to take Mexican pesos with you on vacation. This is especially the case in All-Inclusive resorts. But do make sure you take plenty of small US dollar bills, for tipping the many service staff you’ll encounter during your trip.

Medications

If you’re taking prescription medications, be sure to pack enough to cover the duration of your vacation. Try to transport them in the original packaging which has the prescription information printed on it. It’s also advisable to pack some anti-diarrhea medicine, just in case.

However, also be aware that some medications are illegal to take into Mexico – cold remedies containing pseudoephedrine, for example – so check on this Mexican government webpage before you pack to see what you can and can’t bring into the country.

Sun lotion and after-sun

Sun lotion is an essential item for your Cancun vacation. The sun is relentless and can easily and quickly burn your skin without you noticing. The best sun lotion is ‘reef-safe’ which helps to protect Mexico’s delicate coastal ecosystems. Take strong sun lotion – factor 30 or above is ideal – especially for your first few days when your skin is acclimatizing to the strength of the rays.

Although wearing sun lotion should prevent your skin from burning, packing some soothing after-sun lotion is also a good idea, as not only will it soothe frazzled skin, it will also help to prolong your tan.

Mosquito repellent

Mexico is famous for mosquitoes and they are probably one of the most unpleasant aspects of a Cancun vacation. Swollen, itchy bites are unattractive and uncomfortable, so pack some strong repellent – preferably with DEET – to avoid being bitten altogether. Use repellent around dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are particularly active, or when you are exploring outdoor sites where mosquitoes may be prevalent.

Waterproof phone case

One of the best things about Cancun is getting in that crystal-clear, wonderfully warm, turquoise ocean. You’ll probably want to take some photos too, but don’t risk taking your expensive cell in the water without protecting it first. Waterproof phone cases are an inexpensive way to look after your cell while still allowing you to take the perfect snapshot of your other half enjoying the water.

Reusable water bottle

Dehydration is a major issue for travelers visiting tropical climates. You’ll be hotter than usual and can sweat out a surprising amount of water. Plus, with the increased alcohol intake that goes hand-in-hand with a vacation, you can be left feeling thirsty and tired, or even worse if your dehydration persists.

So, try to pack a good quality reusable water bottle for your vacation. Most hotels will have filtered water meaning you can take a full bottle with you whenever you leave the resort – or even while you’re lazing by the pool.

Details of your airport transportation

In the chaos of packing, many people forget to save or print a copy of their airport transportation confirmation. Without it, you may not know where to go, or who to contact if there’s a problem. Have a copy of the confirmation with you, and you can quickly and easily locate your transportation, making for a smooth and hassle-free transit from the airport to your resort. Here are some of the best airport transportation options from Cancun Airport to Cancun’s Hotel Zone.
