The First 5 Things You NEED To Do When Checking Into Your Cancun Hotel Room

Share The Article

You have finally arrived. You survived the chaos of the shark tank that is the Cancun International Airport arrivals hall, you found your transfer, and you have that icy welcome drink in your hand.

The temptation is to throw your suitcase on the bed, strip down to your swim trunks, and vanish to the swim-up bar until sunset. I get it. I have stayed at over 20 all-inclusive resorts in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, and the pull of the pool is strong.

But at The Cancun Sun, we know that the first 20 minutes in your room dictate how smooth the rest of your week is going to go.

After spending thousands of dollars on a luxury vacation, you don’t want to ruin it because you got sick from a remote control or woke up dehydrated with no water for your coffee. Trust me on this—pause the party for 15 minutes and execute this “check-in protocol.” Your future self will thank you.

1. The Water Stockpile (Do This Immediately)

This is my absolute biggest pet peeve, and it happens to the best of us.

You get to the room, you drink the two small complimentary bottles of water while unpacking, and you forget about it. Then, you wake up at 7:00 AM with a dry mouth, a slight headache from the mezcal the night before, and you realize you have zero water to make coffee.

Now you have to get dressed, call room service, and wait 45 minutes just to brush your teeth (because we do not use tap water here).

The Fix: The second the bellboy drops your bags, check the supply. If there aren’t at least four large bottles, call the front desk/room service immediately.

  • Ask for “extra bottles” right away.
  • Tip the staff $2 USD when they bring them.
  • Tell them, “I drink a lot of water, can you please keep this stocked every day?”

Money talks. If you tip early, you will never be thirsty again.

2. The “CSI” Wipe Down

Let’s be real for a second. Resorts in Cancun are generally very clean. Housekeeping staff work incredibly hard. But they are turning over hundreds of rooms a day, and they are human.

The last thing you want is to catch a cold or a stomach bug on day two of a vacation you invested thousands of dollars in.

I travel with a travel pack of Clorox or Lysol wipes in my carry-on for this exact reason. I spend 2 minutes wiping down the “high touch” points that often get missed during a standard clean:

  • The TV Remote: This is statistically the dirtiest item in any hotel room.
  • Light Switches: Everyone touches them; nobody cleans them.
  • Door Knobs & Handles: Balcony, bathroom, and closet.
  • The Toilet Handle: Self-explanatory.

It might feel like overkill, but I haven’t been sick on a trip in five years. It’s a small insurance policy for your health.

3. Unpack and Organize (Fight The Urge To Dump & Run)

You are thinking: “Yeah right, I am dropping my bag and heading to the beach.”

I used to do that too. I would live out of my suitcase, digging through layers of clothes to find a swimsuit, leaving a trail of chaos across the room. In reality, living out of a suitcase doesn’t save time—it wastes it. You end up spending 15 minutes every evening searching for your “dinner socks” or that one specific charging cable.

The Strategy:

  • Hang it up: Get the linen shirts and dresses out of the bag before the humidity wrinkles them permanently.
  • Drawer system: Put swim gear in one drawer, evening wear in another.
  • Bathroom kit: Set up your toiletries on the counter.

By completely unpacking, you psychologically move into the space. The room becomes yours. Plus, getting ready for dinner becomes a breeze instead of a scavenger hunt.

Cancun Check-In Challenge

Most travelers make 3 critical mistakes in the first 20 minutes. Can you pass the safety protocol?

1. You just walked in. What is the very first thing you check?

2. Statistically, what is the dirtiest item in your hotel room?

3. When should you put your passport in the safe?

4. You hate the beer/soda selection in the mini-bar. What do you do?

5. Why unpack instead of living out of the suitcase?

4. Initiate "Safe Mode" Immediately

This one seems so obvious, but you wouldn't believe the number of seasoned travelers who get complacent. We call it "Vacation Brain." You feel safe in the resort bubble, so you toss your wallet on the nightstand and your passport in a drawer.

While theft is rare inside 5-star resorts, it isn't impossible. And more often than not, the issue isn't theft—it's misplacing things.

Do not wait until you leave the room. As part of your unpacking ritual, take every single high-value item and lock it up:

  • Passports and Travel Visas.
  • Wallets (only keep the cash/card you need for the day).
  • Prescription medications. (Important daily meds)
  • High-end electronics (iPads, laptops, extra cameras).

Pro Tip: Check the safe actually works before you put your stuff in it. If the battery is blinking low, call maintenance now, not when you are trying to rush to the airport.

5. Customize The Mini-Bar

Most travelers look at the mini-bar and accept, "It is what it is." They see two Diet Cokes, two regular Cokes, and a couple of Dos Equis, and they shrug.

You don't have to settle. This is an all-inclusive; the service is meant to be personalized.

If you don't drink sugary soda but you crush ten Coke Zeros a day, or if you prefer Heineken over Tecate, you can change the inventory.

How to do it:

  • The Direct Approach: Call the front desk or the concierge and say, "I would like to request my mini-bar be stocked only with [Your Preference]."
  • The Note Trick: Leave a polite note inside the fridge for the restocking staff: "Please, only Coke Zero and Water. No Sprite. Thank you!"
  • The Grease: Leave a $5 USD tip with the note.

In 90% of mid-range to luxury resorts, they will happily adjust the stock for your entire stay. It turns a generic amenity into a personal luxury.

The Verdict

These five steps take about 20 minutes total. That is 20 minutes of work for seven days of seamless, hydrated, organized, and safe relaxation.

Once you’ve locked the safe and stocked the water, then you can go hit the swim-up bar. You’ve earned it.
