You have your passport. You have your swimsuit. You have your sunglasses. You think you are ready for your Cancun vacation.
But there is one innocuous item that, if forgotten, will lead to the most painful financial transaction of your entire trip. It isn’t a charger, and it isn’t toothpaste.

It is sunscreen.
Here at The Cancun Sun, we constantly hear from travelers who experience “Sticker Shock” in the hotel gift shop. We aren’t talking about a mild markup; we are talking about prices that rival a steak dinner.
If you are packing your bags right now, double-check your toiletry kit. Here is why buying sun protection in Cancun is a rookie mistake that could cost you upwards of $40 USD per bottle.

The “Captive Audience” Tax
The economics of resort gift shops are brutal. They know you cannot go into the sun without protection. They know you are likely miles away from a Walmart. And they price accordingly.
In 2025, it is common to see a standard bottle of Banana Boat or Coppertone priced between $35 and $45 USD at luxury all-inclusive resorts.
- The Math: If a family of four goes through two bottles a week, that is nearly $100 just to not get burned.
- The “Premium” Trap: If you look for higher-end brands like Sun Bum or La Roche-Posay, expect to pay even more.
As we noted in our ultimate Cancun packing list, bringing enough sunscreen for your entire trip (not just the first two days) is the single best money-saving move you can make.

The “OXXO” Solution (And When It Works)
If you do forget your sunscreen, don’t panic immediately. Check your location.
If you are in the Hotel Zone (Km 1-14): You are in luck. The Hotel Zone is dotted with convenience stores like OXXO, 7-Eleven, and Circle K.
- The Fix: Walk out of your resort lobby. If you are within walking distance of a convenience store, you can buy sunscreen for “normal” Mexican prices (usually $12–$18 USD). It is still pricier than Target back home, but it beats the resort markup. For a broader look at where to find essentials, check our shopping guide for tourists.

The “Isolation” Trap (Costa Mujeres & Riviera Maya)
This is where it gets dangerous. If you are staying at a resort in Costa Mujeres (like Planet Hollywood or Riu Dunamar) or deep in the Riviera Maya (like Barceló or Hard Rock), you are isolated.
There is no OXXO across the street. There is only jungle.
- The Problem: You cannot just “take a cab” to the store. As we detailed in our report on soaring taxi prices, a round-trip taxi ride to the nearest town could cost you $60 to $80 USD.
- The Reality: You are mathematically forced to pay the $40 gift shop price because leaving the resort costs more than the markup.

The “Biodegradable” Curveball
There is another layer to this. If you plan on visiting a Cenote or an eco-park like Xcaret, regular sunscreen is banned. You need Biodegradable (Reef Safe) sunscreen containing Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide.
If you show up with regular Coppertone, they will confiscate it at the entrance and force you to buy their eco-friendly brand.
- The Cost: Usually $20–$30 USD for a tiny sample packet.
- The Fix: Buy a bottle of “Reef Safe” lotion on Amazon before you leave home.
`; card.appendChild(header); // Details (Only if active) if (isActive) { const details = document.createElement('div'); details.className = 'details-box'; const diff = item.resort - item.home; details.innerHTML = `
`; card.appendChild(details); } grid.appendChild(card); }); container.appendChild(grid); const footer = document.createElement('div'); footer.className = 'powered-by'; footer.innerHTML = 'Powered by The Cancun Sun'; container.appendChild(footer); }; // Init render(); });
Don’t Forget The Bugs
The same rule applies to Bug Spray. Mosquitoes and “No-See-Ums” can be vicious at dusk, especially in the newer developments like Costa Mujeres where the resorts are built directly into the mangroves.
- Resort Price: $25 USD for a can of OFF!
- Home Price: $6 USD.
The Bottom Line
Make space in your checked bag. Even if you carry on, buy the travel-sized tubes (3.4oz) and pack four of them. Paying the “Sticker Shock” tax on sunscreen is the quickest way to put a damper on your vacation budget.
Happy travels!
