There is a persistent myth about traveling to Mexico that usually hits your wallet about 48 hours into the trip. The logic goes like this: “I am south of the border, the cost of living is lower, therefore shopping for clothes, electronics, and luxury goods must be dirt cheap.”
Think again.

If you walk into a Zara or a Nike store in the Cancun Hotel Zone expecting an outlet-style discount, you are in for a rude awakening. In many cases, you will find the prices are actually the same or higher than what you pay back home in the United States.
Here at The Cancun Sun, we want you to save your pesos for the tacos, not overpriced sneakers. Here is the insider guide to the shopping landscape in Cancun, why the prices are so high in the tourist zone, and where the locals actually shop to get a deal.

The “Tourist Tax”: Why Hotel Zone Malls Are Expensive
The malls in the Hotel Zone—specifically La Isla Shopping Village and Kukulcan Plaza—are not built for bargain hunters. They are built for convenience and luxury.
There are two main reasons prices sting here:
- Import Taxes: Many American and European brands are subject to steep import tariffs when entering Mexico. That iPad or pair of Levi’s jeans often costs 15-20% more here simply due to taxes.
- The “Vacation Premium”: Rent in the Hotel Zone is astronomical. Retailers pass that cost on to you. They know you are a captive audience with a credit card and a “treat yourself” mindset.

However, these malls are still worth visiting for the experience. As we detailed in our insider’s guide to La Isla, the open-air canals, the interactive aquarium, and the sunset views over the lagoon make it a top-tier destination, even if you just buy an ice cream.
The “In-Between”: Marina Puerto Cancun
Located geographically between the Hotel Zone and Downtown, Marina Puerto Cancun is the lifestyle hub for the city’s elite.
It is visually stunning, open-air, and anchored by massive yachts parked out front. The mix here is slightly more diverse, with an H&M and a cinema, but it still leans heavily into “lifestyle pricing.” It is the perfect spot for dinner and a movie, but don’t expect a bargain bin.

The Local Secret: Plaza Las Americas
If you want to know where the people who actually live in Cancun shop, you have to leave the Hotel Zone. You need to go to Plaza Las Americas in Downtown Cancun.
This is the “Mall of America” of Cancun. It is massive, air-conditioned, and packed with locals.
- The Difference: Here, you find the standard pricing for Mexico. You have huge department stores like Liverpool (similar to Macy’s) and a massive Chedraui supermarket.
- The Deals: This is where you go if you forgot a swimsuit, need cheap sunglasses, or want to buy tequila at normal market rates rather than “gift shop” rates.
- Getting There: It is a short ride from the Hotel Zone. As we recommend in our Downtown Cancun guide, taking an Uber is the safest and easiest way to get there and back with your bags.

The Souvenir Trap: Malls vs. Supermarkets
Do not buy your vanilla, hot sauce, or tequila at a boutique in La Isla or the airport duty-free. You are paying for the packaging and the location.
The Pro Tip: Go to the Chedraui Selecto (either in the Hotel Zone or Downtown). This is a high-end grocery store. They have an entire aisle dedicated to “Souvenirs” where you can get the exact same bottle of artisanal tequila for 40% less than the mall price.
The Verdict
If you want to window shop with a gelato in hand while watching the sunset, go to La Isla. It is beautiful, safe, and iconic.
But if you actually need to buy a suitcase full of clothes or gifts and you care about the price tag, take an Uber into town and hit Plaza Las Americas. Your bank account will thank you.
Happy shopping!
