Boutique hotels are all the rage with travelers in 2023, offering quaint rooms, all-inclusive services, and stunning natural surroundings. Unlike resorts, they are much smaller in size, catering to travelers wishing to immerse themselves in culture and nature.
With its plentiful nature, rich Mayan culture, and unique cultural activities, the southern destinations of the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo are seeing more and more boutique hotels open their doors to travelers.

Although all-inclusive resorts will continue to dominate the travel industry across much of the Mexican Caribbean, boutique hotels have seen demand skyrocket in recent months.
While resorts are usually owned and operated by large multinationals, boutique hotels are much smaller, often having just several dozen rooms. What they lack in size, they make up for with their rustic charm, beautiful and cozy design, and proximity to nature and local culture.

In 2023, boutique hotels are experiencing a renaissance in the Mexican Caribbean on the back of growing traveler demand and new investments. And one location in particular is proving to be particularly popular for this growing travel style.
The southern hotspots of Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal are trending for their stunning nature and, increasingly, for having some of the best boutique hotels in the region.

According to Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Quintana Roo’s secretary for tourism, a number of firms are eyeing the sunny region for new boutique properties. “We are carrying out programs in Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal, planting the seeds of new hospitality projects which will evolve in the coming years,” the official said in an interview.
In addition to well-established destinations like Mahahual, other off-the-beaten-path locations in the vicinity are attracting unprecedented attention from travelers. With hotspots like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum increasingly crowded with travelers, the remote villages of Hul Ha and Huay Pix are trending right now.

Situated amidst quaint lagoons and lush rainforests, some 30 projects are underway in the growing destinations, which are set to add over 240 rooms to the region’s inventory. Meanwhile, thousands of Airbnbs and online rentals offer even more choices for travelers seeking a unique stay.

Another factor behind the stunning growth in boutique hotels is travelers’ desire to experience Mayan culture & history. The launching of the Maya Train in December this year is expected to further boost travel numbers in the south of Quintana Roo, which is home to some of the region’s most stunning ruins.

According to Mr. Riestra, ruins like Chacchoben are contributing to the growing demand for boutique hotels and other accommodations in southern Quintana Roo.
The Maya Train, which will have several stations in a number of key hotspots including Tulum, Bacalar, and Chetumal, will make it easier than ever before for travelers to explore the countless hidden treasures of the Mexican Caribbean.
