With just over a month to go, tourists and locals alike are gearing up for the inauguration of the most anticipated project in the Mexican Caribbean and beyond.
As if like a metaphorical key that will unlock the entirety of the Yucatan Peninsula and much more, the billion-dollar Maya train is about to make exploration in this stunning region easy, affordable, and super exciting!
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador(AMLO) has announced that the first tickets to go on sale to the general public for the railway project will begin on December 1st.
The initial train route has been announced between Palenque, Chiapas to Cancun from December 15th, stopping at some popular magical towns along the way, as well as go-to archeological and environmental sites.
Though prices have not yet been finalized, AMLO confirmed that the Maya Train will have tickets that will cost 10 percent less than what public buses cost.
The original mission statement for the project was all about connecting tourists and locals to the Mayan Zone with low-cost trips and promoting some less-known zones and communities, and they seem to be keeping to their word!

The Route
It is certainly no mistake that the first route taking place for the Maya Train is going in and out of the number one hotspot in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun, which is expected to see out the year breaking all records once more.
Cancun saw hotel occupancy levels almost meet full capacity this summer, as more tourists are booking than ever before, and this winter seems to be just the same.
In the past, if people picked Cancun as their vacation destination, a great many tourists would have chosen not to venture far away from its perimeters due to lack of connectivity and affordability.

Now they can choose Cancun as their base but travel far and beyond that point, experiencing all the hidden jewels that surround them, only to be back in their hotel bed by the evening if they so wish.
The route will be traveling through some amazing cities such as Valladolid, Puerto Morelos and Akumal, as well as stops near Chichén Itzá and some other standout sites that are perfect for any tourist looking for some adventure.
When the Maya Train was first brought into the realms of possibility in 2018, the National Tourism Fund (Fonatur) made suggested pricing proposals with different variations for national passengers, international passengers, students and teachers, children and the elderly, and those with disabilities.
The Safety
Officials are keen to have safety as a number one priority when the Maya Train begins its first route next month.
Mexico often finds itself under fire when it comes to suitable security levels from places like the U.S., though regularly without merit, and that is why there are confirmed plans to deploy the National Guard when it opens.
With two thousand officers posted to the landmark project, as well as the new Tulum Airport, which also opens next month, it is clear they are taking it very seriously.
Along with that will be new high-tech drones and satellite monitoring technology in order to deter organized crime and safety breaches, all in the name of making the Maya Train the absolute number one transport service in the entirety of the region.
Yucatan has become one of the safest places to travel to when coming to Mexico due to the government taking significant measures to ensure the safety of tourists.
Now as more and more visitors flock in search of the special vacation that is promised in this gorgeous region, and with the Maya Train unlocking some once-over-looked areas and communities, 2024 is set to become the best year yet!
