A new report from local news outlet PorEsto! suggests that a growing number of travelers are canceling their trip to Cozumel, a popular island near Cancun, due to mounting safety concerns.

While the island is generally safe for travelers, a spike in violent crime in recent years has forced some travelers to opt for more reliable destinations with a better track record in tourist safety.

From dangerous traffic and poor road conditions to scams and theft, tourism businesses in Cozumel are asking officials to take stronger measures to address safety issues.

With that in mind, here’s a look at why some travelers are ditching Cozumel for safer destinations this right now.

Cozumel Resorts See Dip In Bookings This Spring Over Safety Alerts

Cozumel has skyrocketed in popularity with travelers after officially becoming the newest Magical Town in the Mexican Caribbean.

Although the island has enjoyed astonishing popularity for years, Cozumel is now more popular than ever before.

Despite its fame, hundreds of travelers have canceled their reservations for hotels & resorts on the popular island this spring due to rising crime rates.

According to media reports, traveler cancellations are currently affecting everything from hotel & resort bookings to excursions and guided tours, promoting concern from local businesses.

Travelers are also reportedly canceling their vacation rental bookings in Cozumel; the island is particularly popular among digital nomads & younger travelers who tend to seek out good deals on longer stays, many of which are only possible in urban areas with higher crime rates.

The report comes amid a worrying security situation on the large tropical island, where over 33 violent murders have been recorded in the past two years alone.

Fortunately, violent crime rarely affects travelers directly and is largely tied to organized crime that is currently plaguing parts of the island.

Meanwhile, concerns over petty crime on the island also remain.

Much like other Mexican Caribbean destinations, pickpockets are known to target cruise ship and day trip travelers.

Taxis on the Caribbean destination are also infamous for overcharging, adding fuel to the fire when it comes to the island’s otherwise excellent reputation.

But that’s set to change significantly this year thanks to the launching of Quintana Roo’s first-ever ride-hailing app called Mueve-T.

The app will be available to Cancun travelers in April this year, and plans are to expand the new system to other destinations, including Cozumel, later this year.

How Safe Is Cozumel For Travelers This Year?

Despite growing concern over traveler safety in Cozumel, the island remains an excellent destination for visitors – as long as certain safety precautions are followed.

Safety-conscious travelers should book a trip to the stunning island during the busy high season – December to March or during summer – when law enforcement maintains a more visible deterrent against crime.

When it comes to accommodation, visitors are urged to book properties in busy touristy areas, preferably all-inclusive resorts with around-the-clock security.

That said, Cozumel is a large island, and most travelers will want to explore the destination’s quaint beaches and historical wonders.

When it comes to discovering Cozumel’s rich historical & natural beauty, travelers are urged to book tours through reputable firms through platforms like Tripadvisor or Viator.

Although renting motorcycles is a popular pastime for travelers, road conditions can be precarious in many parts of the island.

Instead, opt for a rental car, making sure to choose a rental company with the proper permits & insurances.
