Visiting Cancun In December: 5 Most Important Things Travelers Need To Know

Share The Article

If you are heading to Cancun this December, you are part of a massive movement. The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve represent the absolute peak of the tourism calendar.

The weather is cooling down, the hurricane threats are gone, and millions of travelers are descending on the Mexican Caribbean to escape the cold. But visiting in December is a different beast from visiting in July. The rules change when the occupancy hits 95%.

Here at The Cancun Sun, we are on the ground monitoring the crowds, the prices, and the logistics. To ensure your holiday trip doesn’t turn into a logistical nightmare, here are the 5 most important things you need to know before you board the plane.

1. The “Reservation War” Is Real

“I tried to book a table at the steakhouse at 5:00 PM for a 7:00 PM dinner, and the app wouldn’t let me,” Mike D., a traveler from Chicago staying at the Hyatt Ziva, told The Cancun Sun. “Unless you wake up at 7:00 AM to grab a slot, you are eating at the buffet.”

This is the reality of December. With resorts running at max capacity, the infrastructure is tested. The pools are full by 9:00 AM. The restaurants are booked instantly.

  • The Fix: Download your resort’s app now, before you leave home. Learn the interface. On day one, set an alarm for the exact minute reservations open (usually early morning) and book your dinners for the whole stay if allowed. Patience is your most valuable currency this month.

2. Perfect Weather, With One “Windy” Exception

The good news? The humidity breaks in December. The nights are crisp (70°F) and the days are sunny. The better news? Sargassum season is over. The beaches are cleaner now than at any point in the summer. The catch? “El Norte.”

While hurricanes are gone, cold fronts from the U.S. push down strong winds known as “Nortes.” These can close the ports for snorkeling boats and ferries for 24-48 hours. If you have a boat tour booked, have a backup plan.

3. Peak Season Pricing

You have likely already noticed that your flight and hotel were expensive. Unfortunately, the spending doesn’t stop there. Demand drives prices up across the board. Taxis, tours, and even some souvenirs see a “High Season Markup.”

As we detailed in our report on why vacations are getting pricier, the combination of high demand and local inflation means your dollar doesn’t stretch as far.

  • Insider Tip: Bring more cash (Pesos) than you think you need. ATMs in the Hotel Zone often run dry during holiday weekends due to the sheer volume of withdrawals.

4. Arrival: The E-Gate Advantage

The arrival experience at Cancun International Airport (CUN) has improved drastically, but the volume of people is still overwhelming. Thankfully, the airport has invested heavily in automation.

Travelers Wait For Departure Busy Cancun Airport

“The new E-Gates saved us at least an hour,” a representative for a local transport company told The Cancun Sun. “While the manual lines were backed up to the escalators, US and Canadian tourists with biometric passports were walking through in minutes.” However, as we noted in our coverage of the new automated systems, remember to keep your printed receipt. It acts as your visa and you need it to leave.

5. Departure: The “4-Hour” Rule

Getting to your hotel is usually fine. Getting back to the airport is where people miss flights. Traffic in the Hotel Zone and on Colosio Boulevard can gridlock instantly due to roadworks or a single accident.

During December, the standard advice of “leave 2 hours early” is risky. We strongly recommend leaving your resort 4 hours before your flight time.

  • Why? Check-in lines at the airport will be long. Security will be slow. And if there is traffic on the main highway, a 30-minute drive can become a 90-minute crawl.

The Verdict

December in Cancun is electric. The energy is high, the weather is gorgeous, and the beaches are pristine. But it requires strategy. Book your dinners early, pack a hoodie for the windy nights, and leave for the airport earlier than you want to.
