If travelers have been looking for an opportunity to get away to the island paradise of Isla Holbox, now is the time.
Visitor levels have dropped on the island recently, and deals abound for travelers looking to escape it all and enjoy the rustic Mexican Caribbean charm found on the idyllic island.
Visitation Falls on Island
Isla Holbox has had a rough go this winter with less than ideal weather conditions making travelers not so interested in enjoying the cloudy skies on the beaches.
In fact, many of the resorts and hotels on the island have reported that occupancy has fallen below 50 percent full after the traditional Carnival celebration.
During that domestic celebration, Isla Holbox resorts and hotels hit 100 percent occupancy, but for only two days during the celebration.
They are not expecting a significant pickup until the spring holiday travel season, which starts in a couple of weeks.
Weather Affecting Tourism
Travelers come to Isla Holbox for its rustic charm and great beaches. However, the weather has been less than accommodating recently for visitors to the Mexican Caribbean Island.
Several cold fronts have impacted the island, dropping temperatures below normal and affecting the warm days with the sun, sand, and surf that most tourists desire when visiting the beach resort hotspot.
Also, a strong weather system pummeled the island with large waves carrying away beach palapas and flooding the centro area of the town.
Part of the rustic charm of Isla Holbox is that the roads are unpaved and are sandy pathways. However, when the rain falls, the area floods, and the roads turn to mud.
Getting from one side of the street to the other in the centro area becomes a muddy mess for travelers.
Increased Tourist Promotions
Eager to fill up the hotels in advance of the spring holiday travel season and during the actual busy vacation period itself, resorts and hotels in Isla Holbox have launched a number of aggressive promotions to attract travelers.
As of the time of the writing of this story, hotel rates for Isla Holbox are generally $200 or less per night for the upcoming weekend, with many budget hotels priced well under $100 per night.
Looking at the second weekend in March, there was a limited number of available rooms at some properties on a major travel website, with many of them still priced just under $200 per night. There are fewer rooms under $100 as compared with this weekend.
Room rates were also reasonably priced on the last weekend of March as well, at the time of the writing of this Cancun Sun story.
What Tourists Need to Know
If a traveler is looking for a last-minute vacation getaway, Isla Holbox is a compelling value right now for budget-oriented travelers.
Due to recent unfavorable weather conditions, deals abound for travelers looking to get away from the typical Cancun experience and connect back to nature and sustainability.
However, tourists should not expect the deals to last long as there is already limited availability for the best deals for the upcoming peak spring holiday travel season.
Visitors may want to consider now adding Isla Holbox to their Mexican Caribbean vacation getaway for at least a couple of days to enjoy the island’s rustic charm.
If that’s the plan, tourists should book their hotel rooms now while the promotions are in place and the best deals are available to increase the visitation to the island.
The best deals should only last a couple of days at most due to the traditionally strong tourist demand for hotel rooms on the island.

I’ll never go back to Holbox. The roads are really that bad, full of knee-deep puddles you can’t get around. So there goes being eco-conscious and walking around everywhere; instead you have to pay the cab cartel $20USD each way in loud, polluting ATVs.
It’s a joke.
