You have been planning this trip for months. The flights are booked, the out-of-office email is drafted, and you can practically taste the margarita. But then you look at your itinerary and realize your flight lands at 5:15 PM.
In the world of travel, a 5:00 PM arrival sounds reasonable. In Cancun, however, it is a logistical trap that can cost you hundreds of dollars.

At The Cancun Sun, we see travelers make the same mistake every week. They book their expensive all-inclusive resort starting from Day 1, even though they won’t actually step foot in the lobby until well after dark. By the time you clear immigration, battle the baggage carousel, and navigate the transfer traffic, your “first day” of vacation is reduced to a late dinner and passing out from exhaustion.
Here is why seasoned Cancun veterans are skipping the resort on night one, and the two specific airport hotels you should book instead.

The Economics of the “Wasted Night”
Let’s do the math. The average nightly rate for a high-end all-inclusive resort in 2026 is hovering between $500 and $800 USD per night.
If you land at 5:00 PM, the clock is working against you.
- Immigration & Customs: 30 minutes (even with the new E-Gates).
- Baggage Claim: As we have noted in our recent airport arrival guides, luggage handling often lags behind passenger processing, adding another 45-60 minutes.
- Transportation: 45–60 minutes to the Hotel Zone or Playa Mujeres (traffic is heaviest at dusk).
Realistically, you wont arrive to your room until 8:30 after finishing your check in. You are tired, sweaty, and hungry. You will likely grab a quick bite at the buffet and go to sleep.
The Result: You just paid $700 for a bed and a plate of food from the buffet.

The “Fresh Start” Strategy
The smarter move? Save that $700. Book a clean, convenient airport hotel for $150. Sleep off the travel fatigue, wake up fresh, and take a transfer to your resort the next morning at 10:00 AM.

Most resorts will let you check in early (even if the room isn’t ready), store your bags, and give you your wristband immediately. This means you get a full Day 1 on the beach, fully rested, for a fraction of the cost. Pro tip: Have your beach bay ready with everything you will need before checking into your room at 3:00pm.
Here are the only two airport hotels we recommend for this strategy.
1. Hilton Garden Inn Cancun Airport (The Convenience King)
Best For: Travelers who want zero hassle and zero shuttles.
This is the heavy hitter of airport convenience. The Hilton Garden Inn is the only hotel located directly inside the airport grounds. If you land in Terminal 2 or Terminal 3, you can quite literally walk to the front desk.

- The Vibe: It is modern, incredibly soundproofed (you won’t hear the jets), and features a surprisingly nice pool if you need a quick dip to wash off the airplane grime.
- The Perk: No shuttles. No waiting for a driver. You walk out of the terminal, check in, and crash.
- Dining: They have a full restaurant and bar on-site. It’s not all-inclusive luxury, but the burger and beer will taste like heaven after a 6-hour flight.
This hotel is consistently rated the highest because it eliminates the one thing you hate most after flying: more transportation.

2. Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Cancun Airport (The Value Pick)
Best For: Budget-conscious travelers and points collectors.
Located just a 5-minute drive from the terminals, the Fairfield Inn & Suites shares a complex with the Courtyard Marriott, but we prefer the Fairfield for one reason: Value.

- The Vibe: It is newer, brighter, and generally cheaper than the Hilton. The rooms are simple but spotless, designed exactly for what you need: a good night’s sleep.
- The Perk: Free Breakfast. Unlike the Hilton, where breakfast is usually extra, the Fairfield includes a solid hot breakfast buffet. You can fuel up on eggs and coffee for free before heading to your resort.
- The Shuttle: They run a complimentary shuttle every 30 minutes. Yes, you have to wait for it, but for a savings of potentially $50–$80 a night compared to the Hilton, it’s often worth the short wait.

Summary
If you are landing after 5:00 PM, don't force it.
- Book the Hilton Garden Inn if you want to walk from the plane to your pillow.
- Book the Fairfield Inn if you want to save cash and get a free breakfast.
Wake up the next day, grab a private transfer (book it for 10:00 AM), and arrive at your resort like a champion—rested, energized, and ready to eat and drink your money’s worth.
