It’s no surprise that Cancun is a popular winter vacation destination.
Particularly, American and Canadian travelers who experience cold temperatures during the winter months love to escape to the sunny beaches of Cancun.
And for those who will be escaping to this tropical paradise during the next several months, there are 7 important things that travelers need to know about visiting Cancun this winter.
High Occupancy Expected
Winter is one of the busiest seasons in Cancun because it’s the perfect destination for travelers wanting to escape the cold.
During December of 2022, occupancy rates stayed right at around 80 percent throughout the month.
Even after the holiday, when travelers have less time off for vacations, Cancun still maintains an average occupancy rate of over 65 percent, so if you’re traveling to Cancun in the winter, expect crowds.

Completion Of Maya Train
An exciting project that will benefit tourists looking to explore during their Cancun vacation is the highly anticipated Maya Train.
It’s expected to be completed by December, along with the station located at Cancun Airport, which will allow travelers to board without having to leave the airport.
The Maya Train will allow tourists to explore the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

More Nonstop Flights Than Ever
Cancun Airport welcomes more than 500 flights a day on average, and many of these flights arrive from international destinations, with a good portion of them coming from the United States and Canada.
In fact, currently, flights to Cancun are available from 38 U.S. cities and 21 Canadian cities.
Now, American Airlines recently announced that they will be adding new routes from the U.S. and increasing flight frequencies on some existing routes.
This means there will be more nonstop flights than ever between the United States and Cancun.

Possible Delays Getting To Airport
One thing that travelers visiting Cancun this winter need to be aware of is possible delays in getting to the airport for return flights home.
Numerous delays have been announced over the last year, including a recent announcement about the partial closure of a main road leading to the airport.
While the length of the closure is currently unknown, the many infrastructure projects being conducted in the vacation destination have caused delays more than once, so it’s important to stay informed about the situation.
New Hotels Openings
Over the last couple of years, at least 15 new hotels have opened in Cancun, so if you prefer a modern, crisp, clean hotel, you’re in luck.
From luxury all-inclusives to highly-rated well-known brands, there are plenty of both old and new hotels and resorts to choose from.
In the Riviera Maya region as a whole, which encompasses Cancun, there are more than 130,000 hotel rooms, and more are set to be added over the next couple of years.
Rising Hotel Costs
Another bit of important information for travelers visiting Cancun this winter is that hotel rates are on the rise in the vacation destination.
This includes 5-star, 4-star, and 3-star hotels, which have increased at rates of 9, 4, and 5 percent, respectively.
There are still plenty of options, though, with rates for highly-rated 5-star hotels starting as low as $142 a night.
Best Cancun Beaches To Visit This Winter
One of the benefits of visiting Cancun during the winter months is the lack of sargassum on the beaches.
There are many great beaches to choose from, including Playa Delfines, Playa Caracol, and Playa Gaviota Azul, which are some of the best.
Each has the capacity to make your Cancun winter vacation dreams come true.
