The Maya Train is a historic undertaking for the Mexican Caribbean. Stretching over 1,500 kilometers in length, the massive railway project will connect dozens of cities and towns across the Yucatan Peninsula, allowing travelers to visit their favorite destinations at record speed.

But building such an intricate infrastructure project is no easy task. In fact, work on the railway system began in 2020 and has cost nearly $30 billion. Along the way, workers have made a number of astonishing discoveries, including ancient artifacts and buildings.

This week, Maya Train construction workers made yet another surprising discovery near the Magical Town of Bacalar.

As workers were using excavators to make room for new railway tracks, they uncovered a massive azure well that quickly flooded a part of the construction site.

The spontaneously formed lagoon has captured the attention of residents in the town of Buenavista, who rushed to the location to take pictures of the lagoon’s azure beauty.

Bacalar and the areas surrounding the quaint village are known for their stunning natural beauty and unique geology. The region, some four hours south of Cancun, is home to dozens of cenotes – or freshwater sinkholes – as well as colorful lagoons in varying shades of blue.

Buneavista now has a new and unexpected natural wonder with a huge tourism potential. Local residents and city officials are now mulling over making the natural pool into an official attraction for travelers to visit.

Although it’s too early to say whether the upcoming Maya Train may disrupt these plans, Buenavista has attracted significant media attention over the past several days, as travelers and residents from across Quintana Roo have expressed interest in visiting the remote destination.

These Hotspots Are Gearing Up For A Record Number Of Visitors Thanks To The Maya Train

Destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum have enjoyed remarkable popularity with travelers for several decades thanks to mass transit and a booming hotel and resort scene.

Meanwhile, other off-the-beaten-path destinations, including Bacalar and Chetumal, receive far fewer visitors due to their more remote locations. But that’s set to change with the completion of the Maya Train.

The southern portion of the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo is set to receive a huge influx of travelers in just several weeks, thanks to the launching of the Maya Train. Famous for its idyllic boutique accommodations and Mayan communities, places like Chetumal are anticipating a record-breaking year for travel.

Travel numbers are set to grow further in 2024 thanks to Tulum’s new international airport, which will enable faster connections to new unexplored regions of the Mexican Caribbean, including Buenavista, which has already attracted the interest of numerous travelers.
