Growing Number Of Airline Eyeing Tulum’s New International Airport

Tulum is one of the most popular resort destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Despite the long journey from Cancun to Tulum, thousands of travelers flock to the historic destination each day to enjoy its beautiful ruins, white-sand beaches, and laid-back culture.

Next year, reaching the tropical hotspot will be easier than ever before as multiple airlines reveal new flights to the growing destination. Although several Mexican carriers have already announced routes to the new airport, no U.S. airlines have done so until now.

Last week, Delta became the first U.S.-based airline to announce a new nonstop connection to the crown jewel of southern Quintana Roo. Delta is among the largest U.S. carriers, maintaining a significant network of direct flights to Cancun. The legacy carrier now seeks to expand its offerings to include Tulum’s new International airport, which is set to open in December this year.

Delta will begin operating the new nonstop connection starting on March 28, 2024, from its main U.S. hub, Atlanta. The airline will operate the new route daily throughout the year with its extensive fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which feature 108 standard economy seats as well as more comfortable options for those traveling in Comfort+ or first-class.

Delta’s announcement is a game changer for travelers wishing to experience everything Tulum has to offer. Compared to hotspots situated in the northern part of Quintana Roo, Tulum lacks an international airport.

But that’s all set to change this December when the city’s new Felipe Carrillo International Airport will open to travelers and flights from Mexico and beyond. Alongside the Maya Train, Tulum’s brand-new airport is the largest tourism infrastructure project to date in the sun-drenched destination.

The multi-million undertaking will soon wrap up, providing a new gateway to Tulum and the stunning destinations that surround it, including Akumal and Sian Ka’an. Designed to handle over 4 million passengers per year, the massive project is expected to distribute the flow of inbound traffic to the Mexican Caribbean, easing pressure from Cancun’s congested airport.

Several other U.S. carriers – including American Airlines and United – are likely to announce new routes to Tulum’s airport, although they have yet to reveal concrete plans. In the meantime, significant progress is being made on the airport, which is expected to open on time.

Tulum Growing In Popularity With Travelers This Year

Tulum has always been one of the more successful Mexican Caribbean destinations, owing to its rich historical wonders combined with its breathtaking nature.

This year, the coastal destination is expected to be among the most popular with travelers thanks to new investments in beach cleanliness and safety. The completion of the Maya Train will allow for visitor numbers to explode, and officials want to make sure the coastal hotspot remains safe as the Mexican Caribbean gears up for a record-breaking winter season.
