It won’t be long before tourists visiting the Riviera Maya region will be able to enjoy the benefits of the Maya Train.

The train will give visitors access to numerous popular destinations throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, cities and towns that are currently a lot more difficult and more expensive to reach.

As an added benefit, visitors flying into Cancun International Airport will be able to access the train right from the airport, as an electric minibus will make getting to the Maya Train from Cancun Airport a breeze.

What Is The Maya Train?

The Mayan Train, also referred to as Tren Maya, is a massive train project that will be installed throughout nearly 1,000 miles of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Its installation will not only aid in the distribution of wealth in the region and promote social integration, but it will help bring tourists to more than just the areas around the Cancun International Airport.

It will also be used to transport cargo throughout the region.

Projected Completion Date

The Maya Train project is projected to be completed by September 24th of this year.

Prior to that, a test run of 9,000 miles will be executed in order to determine the capabilities of the train and to ensure that everything is working properly.

According to Óscar Lozano, Director General of Tren Maya, actual operations are projected to begin on December 1, 2023.

Maya Train Stops

The 42 trains that will run on the Maya Train track will pass through five Mexican states located within the Yucatán Peninsula.  Those states are:

  • Quintana Roo – Home to popular vacation destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
  • Yucatán – Home to the famous Chichén Itzá Mayan Ruins.
  • Campeche – A port city with more than 300 miles of coastline.
  • Tabasco – An ecotourism hotspot that includes rainforests, mountains, and coastline.
  • Chiapas – A state where tourists can visit Spanish colonial towns and Mayan archeological sites.

Access From Cancun Airport

Not only will the Maya Train stop at a number of different airports throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, but tourists who fly into Cancun Airport will have even easier access to the train.

According to Jorge Nuño Lara, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, an electric minibus will connect travelers who arrive at Cancun Airport to the nearest train station.

This will allow visitors visiting other areas of the Yucatán Peninsula to go directly from the airport to their destinations via the minibus and then the train.

What To See Along The Way

Cancun visitors who want to take a ride on the Mayan Train will have the opportunity to see many important cultural, historical, and natural sights along the route.

Tourists will have easier access to the many Mayan archeological sites located throughout the peninsula, a large collection of cenotes, and some of Mexico’s most magical Magic towns.

Additionally, the sights from the train itself will be worth a ride alone.

Mayan Train Affordability

Anyone who has been to Cancun in recent years knows how expensive taxis can be, and Ubers, which are a cheaper option, are still constantly being targeted by taxi drivers.

Just a taxi from Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone can cost upwards of $50, so getting to other places, like Playa del Carmen, is really pricey.

Fortunately, the Maya Train will be a cheaper option to get to some of these other destinations.

Although ticket prices have yet to be officially announced, an early estimate from Mexico’s National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism was a starting price of a little over $4 for tourists and less for locals.

Cancun Airport

Last year Cancun Airport served more than 30 million passengers.

The electric minibus that will get huge numbers of passengers to the Maya Train will greatly benefit the continued growth of the airport and the passengers who arrive there.
