Share The Article

Worried that seaweed might ruin your beach day? Think again—Cancun and the Riviera Maya are turning the tide on sargassum.

A month before the 2025 sargassum season officially ends, Quintana Roo has already removed a massive 49,000 tons, blowing past last year’s 37,000 tons—proof that beaches are cleaner than many travelers expect.

Cleanup crews are working harder and smarter than ever, and the results are showing. From Playa del Carmen to Puerto Morelos, proactive efforts are keeping the coastline clear.

While patches may still appear, your vacation can still be picture-perfect with a few simple tips.

Record-Busting Cleanup on Mexican Caribbean Shores

This year’s beach-cleaning campaign in Quintana Roo has been extraordinary.

Removal efforts began early in January, well before the official season kicks in April, and peaked with nearly 18,000 tons in June alone, plus over 10,000 tons in the first half of July.

By July 16, the total cleared has already beaten last year’s full-season tally by around 12,000 tons—and there’s still time left in the season.

How the Tally Breaks Down

Local beach towns are leading the charge:

  • Playa del Carmen: ~21,000 tons—about 43% of the total haul
  • Mahahual/Xcalak (Othón P. Blanco): ~8,000 tons (16%)
  • Puerto Morelos: ~7,000 tons (14%)

Those numbers underscore how proactive coastal communities’ clean-up efforts have been this summer.

Big Clean-Up Costs, Big Impact

Between 2022 and 2024, Quintana Roo’s investment into sargassum management exceeded 238 million pesos (~$12 million USD), funding floating barriers, beach crews, transfer vehicles, and more.

This year, Cancun alone deployed 340 workers, seven sweepers, seven tractors, backhoes, dump trucks—and a healthy fleet of Navy vessels offshore.

Don’t Let Sargassum Cramp Your Style

Despite these achievements, ocean drifts can still bring in fresh patches overnight. So don’t fret—here are smart ways to dodge it and enjoy your trip to the fullest:

  1. Pick beaches with offshore nets and cleanup teams
Most resorts and municipalities—Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen—use barrier systems and post-clean-up teams that sweep sands before sunrise.
  2. Use live webcams & daily updates
As we advised in our “Don’t Be Fooled” explainer, photos online can be misleading; real-time cams help you scout your beach before breakfast.
  3. Opt for west-facing shores and islands
Beaches on Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, and west Playa del Carmen suffer far less sargassum, thanks to currents—just a quick ferry or day-trip away.
  4. Have backup plans—cenotes, parks, or inland escapes
In our guide, Sargassum Season: 7 Alternative Things To Do In Cancun, we showed how cenote swimming, jungle adventures, and underground rivers are sargassum-proof and tons of fun.
  5. Stay flexible
Grab a room with a pool view or adjust your plans—Cancun tourism remains strong, with high hotel occupancy despite concerns about sargassum.
