Maya Train Will Not Be Fully Completed By March As Originally Planned

Last Updated

The first section of the Maya Train route was inaugurated in mid-December, and tickets sold out almost immediately.

The launch seemed to go off without a hitch, but in the month or so since, there have been several issues, the most recent being tourists having their trip canceled at the last minute.

It’s not uncommon for such a complex project to start off with some issues, but now the completion date of the project has been moved as well.

Remaining Sections Of The Maya Train Not Yet Open

Currently, there are still three sections of the Maya Train route that are not yet open.

They are Section 5, which is broken into two subsections, north and south, Section 6, and Section 7.

These are the sections that run along the Caribbean coast and then back over to Campeche, a route that is surely to be one of the most popular among tourists, as it includes well-known vacation destinations like Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Expected Completion Date According To Reports

According to reports, the Maya Train will not be completely ready by February 29th as originally planned.

Now tourists can expect the entire project to be completed in April or May.

One of the most anticipated sections, Section 5, will be partially completed by the original data. Tourists will be able to take the train from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, but no further.

Once the entirety of Section 5 is complete in April or May, tourists will be able to go from Cancun to Tulum – one of the most desirable routes.

The Progress, Or Lack Thereof

Engineers working on the train anonymously reported that there is still much work to be done.

Much of the groundwork for what’s left of the track to be installed for the other two sections is not even completed yet.

Other Issues Surrounding The Project

In addition to the lack of progress on two of the remaining three sections of the Maya Train route, there are other issues to be dealt with before launching.

There has been controversy surrounding the effect the train will have on the environment and local communities.

One of those communities recently formed a blockade because they need a passage for their livestock that has not yet been prepared, so this could cause a delay as well.

Sections Of The Maya Train Currently Operating

Right now four sections of the Maya Train are already operational.

These sections combined make up the route going from Cancun all the way down to Palenque.

The route has been hugely popular, with tickets selling like hotcakes, despite the issues that the train has faced since beginning operations.

Tickets for that route are priced at between around $43 and $197, depending on the origin, destination, and ticket class.

What The Maya Train Means For Tourists

Once fully operational, tourists will be able to travel throughout the Mexican Caribbean and the Yucatan Peninsula for a much more affordable price.

The speed at which the train travels also makes it a quicker way to travel.

This gives tourists the option to see more during their vacations in the region.

To Ride Or Not To Ride, That Is The Question

After hearing about the passengers being left stranded, you might be unsure about taking the train, but most trips have gone on without issue.

The main thing is to have a backup plan just in case the train can’t get you to where you’re going.

If you plan on visiting Tulum or destinations further south, though, you’ll have to wait until at least February, and maybe even later, anyway.
