Isla Mujeres is set to have some of its beaches awarded with the iconic Blue Flag certification this week after the island’s popularity seems to be growing exponentially among tourists.
Just a short ferry ride away from the bustling city of Cancun lies an upcoming tourist hotspot that is complete with some of the most picturesque natural beauty in all of the Mexican Caribbean.
While some areas specifically are already certified with protections and awards, the local authorities are pushing for more of the island to be covered by the Blue Flag certification, which will inevitably drive more tourism and in turn, bring prosperity to the local economy.
In order to achieve Blue Flag status, beaches must meet strict environmental, safety, and accessibility standards and are not just awarded to any old area; they have to be able to stand out particularly, which is why they are so popular among tourists and locals.

The blue flag certification will also bring the expectation of hotels in surrounding areas to meet the same high standard, therefore leading to mass tourism on the island, with the convenience of the location to Cancun being another huge draw.

Not too long ago, Isla Mujeres was only a small fishing village, and tourism in the area was practically non-existent.
In recent years, after being awarded the coveted “Magical Town” status, given to any area that is believed to be of historical, cultural, or environmental significance, Isla Mujeres has seen an uptick in tourist arrivals, and it shows no sign of slowing down.
