Why Visitors Are Flocking To This Stunning Island Near Cancun This Winter

Last Updated

After a slow start to the year, travelers have started to increase on the very popular Mexican Caribbean island getaway of Isla Holbox.

Recently, boat operators transporting visitors to the island paradise have seen their number of passengers increase by a significant 60 percent.

Travel Picks Up in Holbox

Tourists love visiting Isla Holbox because of its rustic charm that is a throwback to how the Mexican Caribbean used to be instead of the other megacity tourist destinations nearby.

With exotic tropical destinations like Ojo de Agua Yalahau, Pasión Island, Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito, the Isla Holbox area is often at the top of the must-see list for an island escape.

The warm island vacation hotspot was actually affected by a cold weather blast that kept most travelers away from the sun, sand and surf of Isla Holbox at the start of the near year.

With the sun back out and the sand getting warm, tourists are again flocking to Isla Holbox to enjoy the beautiful beaches.

Recent Beach Cleaning

Another major reason why travelers come to Isla Holbox is because of its reputation for pristine and clean beaches.

Recently, work was done on the beaches in the Lázaro Cárdenas area to make sure they were up to the standards travelers expect when visiting Isla Holbox.

The result is some of the cleanest white sand beaches available anywhere in the Mexican Caribbean and a perfect place for a chair in the sand and a drink in your hand.

Local Tours on the Increase

Along with tourists enjoying the soft white sand of the Lázaro Cárdenas beaches, tours are also on the increase, with travelers looking to explore other parts of the tropical island.

Visits to Ojo de Agua Yalahau, along with tours Pasión Island, Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito have significantly increased as visitors travel to Isla Holbox and seek to explore the other popular areas of the island.

Punta Mosquito is a popular tour destination with travelers to Isla Holbox. Travelers not only love the soft white sand on the beach. They also enjoy birdwatching at one of the main places to gaze at pink flamingos enjoying the sand and warm waters.

Another hot tour spot with travelers is Pasión Island where tourists can try their skill at hand fishing and even explore the Yalahau cenote and its bubbling waters.

Another place to relax and getaway from the hustle and bustle of life is to spend some time at Punta Cocos. A popular place for selfies, Punta Cocos is definitely a place to enjoy the sun, sand and surf that Jimmy Buffet was always singing about.

The Rustic Escape

Another feature of Isla Holbox that makes the island so popular with travelers is the rustic charm, such as the sand roadways in the centro area of the island.

However, travelers should be warned! While this rustic charm can be fun and exciting when getting around on a bike or local golf cart when the sun is shining. It can turn into a little bit of a mess in a rainstorm. But hey, it’s part of the rustic escape to island life.

Tips For Travelers

Travelers who are more city dwellers might enjoy a quick one- or two-day trip to Isla Holbox as it does not have some of the megacity features found in Cancun or Merida. Sorry, but you won’t find a McDonalds on Isla Holbox. However, you might enjoy Mc Donna’s instead.

For those who truly want to get away from it all and enjoy a trip back in time to how the Mexican Caribbean used to be, there is no better choice than Isla Holbox.

We'd like to visit Bacalar And Merida (w/a few days on Isla Mujeres) by Maya Tren; however we're unsure of which routes are currently available. I see that the new Tulum airport is scheduled to open in March, so this complicates planning unless we fly into Cancun. Please supply any additional information you can. Gracias!
