How Cancun Is Tackling Its 5 Biggest Challenges To Remain A Top World Destination

CANCUN — With immense popularity come significant challenges. For years, travelers to Cancun have voiced a consistent set of concerns: the unpredictable scourge of sargassum, the “wild west” of airport transportation, and the growing pains of a destination straining under its own success.

But Cancun isn’t resting on its laurels. In a massive, coordinated effort, state and federal authorities are investing billions of dollars to directly tackle these five key issues head-on, future-proofing the region’s status as a top global destination.

How Cancun Is Tackling Its 5 Biggest Challenges To Remain A Top World Destination

Here at The Cancun Sun, we’ve done a deep dive into the official plans and on-the-ground reality to show you how Cancun is actively solving its biggest problems.

1. The Challenge: Chaotic Airport Transportation

The pain point of navigating the gauntlet of expensive and unregulated taxis upon arrival is legendary.

  • The Solution: After years of debate, the state’s new Mobility Law is being implemented. The most significant part of this for travelers is the development of a government-regulated taxi app. This app, which is in its final stages of development, promises to bring standardized, transparent pricing, digital payments, and a new level of accountability to the taxi industry, finally addressing one of the longest-standing complaints from visitors.

2. The Challenge: The Annual Sargassum Invasion

The seasonal arrival of sargassum has been the single biggest environmental challenge for the Mexican Caribbean.

  • The Solution: Authorities are now deploying a more aggressive, two-pronged strategy. Official naval reports confirms the deployment of over 9,000 meters of new, advanced offshore barriers in key areas. This is paired with a fleet of new, specialized sargassum collection ships that gather the seaweed in the open ocean before it can ever reach the pristine white-sand beaches, representing a major evolution in the annual battle.

3. The Challenge: The Perception of Insecurity

While Cancun remains a very safe destination, authorities are taking unprecedented and highly visible steps to combat any perception of insecurity.

4. The Challenge: Growing Pains & Infrastructure

Maya Train

The explosive growth of the region has put a major strain on its infrastructure, leading to traffic and long travel times.

  • The Solution: Two mega-projects are now a reality. The Maya Train is operational, connecting Cancun to the rest of the peninsula and offering tourists an entirely new way to explore ancient ruins and colonial cities. More immediately, the Nichupté Bridge is nearing completion. This massive bridge over the lagoon will finally solve the Hotel Zone’s worst traffic chokepoints, promising to slash airport transfer times.

5. The Challenge: Balancing Tourism and Nature

As tourism booms, the pressure on the region’s fragile ecosystem has grown.

  • The Solution: There is a new and powerful federal focus on conservation. This is most evident in the creation of massive new protected areas, including the Parque Nacional del Jaguar in Tulum and the Parque Nacional del Templo de Kukulcán around Chichen Itza. These projects, combined with new sustainability practices and technology being implemented by resorts, represent a major commitment to protecting the natural beauty that draws millions here in the first place.

Not Yet Tackled: Baggage Wait Times

While the recent expansion of automated e-Gates has been a massive success, allowing many travelers to fly through immigration in just a few minutes, it has also exposed the next major bottleneck in the arrival process: baggage claim. Travelers now often find themselves in the frustrating position of clearing customs at record speed, only to face a wait of 30 minutes to over an hour for their checked luggage to arrive at the carousel, especially during the peak midday arrival rush.

This has effectively shifted the “waiting game” from the immigration hall to the baggage hall. As Cancun heads into another busy high season, the hope among travelers is that airport authorities will invest in hiring more ground crew or upgrading the baggage handling technology to match the incredible efficiency of the new e-Gates, creating a truly seamless arrival experience from start to finish.

These ambitious projects show a clear vision for the future: a Cancun that is not only more beautiful and fun, but also safer, more accessible, and more sustainable for the millions of travelers who visit each year.
